Animal Science Club Minutes 5/12/10

I. Treasurer’s Report
Account: $1,244.27

II. Misty Meadows Recap
A few club members went to Misty Meadows on May 8th and Beth and Amanda recapped the event for us. They found that they ended up learning (trimming goat hooves for example) more than volunteering, which is great for those who went. We will try to do another trip in the fall.

III. Camping Trip
The camping trip is planned for May 14th (Friday) – May 15th (Saturday). Coordinate with the driver of your car on where you will get picked up and exactly what time.

IV. Banquet
It is on the last day of classes, Tuesday May 18th at 5:30pm at Deer Park (at the end of Main Street by New London Rd.). We will be handing out awards/certificates, welcoming the new officers (Jake, Holly, and Tom) and will have the slideshow from our trips.

V. Announcements
o Senior gift assembly volunteers wanted: likely will start tomorrow night (Thursday, May 13th). Email Amanda Otteni if interested (amandao@udel.edu).
o Advisor Appreciation Luncheon: Thursday, May 20th, at 11:30am in the Townsend Commons.

Animal Science Club Minutes 5/5/10

I. Treasurer’s Report
o $1,244.27

II. Ag Day Recap
The club offered up new ideas to improve Animal Science Club’s Ag Day next year. We will definitely change the shifts to one hour shifts and are looking into other modifications, like pre-assigned jobs and a training session. This year, we made $621.53 at Ag Day! Thanks for everyone’s hard work.

III. Misty Meadows
A volunteer event is scheduled for this Saturday, May 8th, to help at Misty Meadows (a horse barn) in the morning. We are looking for more people to drive so if interested, please email me (simonec@udel.edu) with your name, cell #, and how many you can take if you can drive. You will be reimbursed for gas. If we do not have enough transportation, we will cancel the trip.

IV. Camping Trip
The camping trip is planned for May 14th (Friday) – May 15th (Saturday). Be on the lookout for an email from Julia Robinson with details on the logistics if you are signed up to go camping. We will also need your $10 deposit for food by the next meeting.

V. Banquet
The end of year banquet is on the last day of classes, Tuesday May 18th at 5:30pm at Deer Park (at the end of Main Street by New London Rd.). The club will be paying so please only sign up if you are definitely going! We will be handing out awards/certificates and will have the slideshow from our trips.

VI. Announcements
o Garden for the Community Volunteers Wanted:
Saturday, May 8th: 10am-5pm
Sunday, May 9th: 9-2pm
Just show up at the garden and someone will tell you what to do. The garden is by the girl scouts building on south campus. For more information, contact Katie Pesce (ktp@udel.edu).
o Advisor Appreciation Luncheon: Thursday, May 20th, at 11:30am in the Townsend Commons. *If you would like to nominate an advisor (academic or club) please write a few sentences on why you chose your nominee and email Katie (ktp@udel.edu) or drop off in the AgCC mailbox in Townsend 104.
o AgCC Fundraiser: Tuesday, May 11th, 9pm-midnight at the Blue Hen Lanes (at the end of main street behind the Newark Shopping Center). Admission is $10.00, which includes shoes.

I. Treasurer’s Report

II. Ag Day
Ag Day is this weekend - April 24th (Saturday). You should have received an email with a list of the shift assignments. If there are any questions about the shifts, send me an email.
There is also an extended clean up shift (4-5ish) and set up shift (the pens) on Friday at 12:30pm. Please email me (simonec@udel.edu) if you can help out – this is for the Ag Day Planning Committee and the pens are for ANSC Club.

III. Ag Day T-Shirts
We handed out the t-shirts for Ag Day. If you have not picked yours up yet and want to do so before Ag Day, Nicole will be available to meet at Trabant – just send her an email to arrange a time (naizaga@udel.edu). We will also have them at Ag Day.

IV. Guest Speaker
Joyce Massie, admissions coordinator, from Virginia Tech came to speak about getting into vet school and what their school has to offer. If you want to ask any questions, you can send her an email at dvmadmit@vt.edu

V. Emu Farm
The Emu Farm trip is next Wednesday, in place of a regular meeting. We are leaving from behind Townsend at 5:20pm. Questions or concerns – contact Jake Hunt (jlhholsteins@gmail.com). You will receive a reminder email early next week.

VI. Announcement from Dr. Griffiths
At Ag Day, there is a sheep sheering demo and Dr. Griffiths wants to know if anyone would be willing to “model” some wool products and bring your Ugg boots. Send her an email at lesa@udel.edu if you can do this.

II. Ag Day
Ag Day is in two weeks - April 24th (Saturday). Shifts are Friday at 2pm (set up), Saturday 8:30-10am, 10-12, 12-2, and 2-4:30 (clean up). If you have not signed up yet, we could use a few more people at the Friday shift, as well as the 12-2 and 2-4:30 shifts on Saturday. We will be teaching balloon animals after our next meeting. For active membership we ask that you participate in at least one Saturday shift.

II. Ag Day
Ag Day is on April 24th (Saturday). Shifts are Friday at 2pm (set up), Saturday 8:30-10am, 10-12, 12-2, and 2-4:30 (clean up). It’s not too late to sign up – we could use a few more people at the Friday shift, as well as the 12-2 and 2-4:30 shifts on Saturday. We will be teaching balloon animals after spring break. For active membership we ask that you participate in at least one Saturday shift.

III. Ag Day T-Shirts
It is a teal shirt with white writing with the slogan, “Just moo it” along with a cow patched Nike swoosh. The t-shirts are $10.00 each. It is imperative that you pay by April 7th if you sign(ed) up!

IV. Banquet
The club will be going to Deer Park on the last day of classes. This is a great way to celebrate the end of the year and welcome new e-board members.

V. Executive Board Nominations and Election

V. Fun facts about cows
o Have been called “foster mothers of the human race” because they produce much more milk than we can ever hope to produce.
o Cows must have a calf before she can produce milk!
o A cow can milk usually for 3-4 years
o Often about 2 years old at birth of first calf.
o Chew their cud about 8 hrs/day.
o We will have Holstein cows

VI. Banquet
The club voted and we will be going to Deer Park on the last day of classes. This is where we went last year and those who went enjoyed it. It was also more affordable.

VII. Guest Speaker
Patrick Carol from the Delaware Humane Society came to speak to us about their facility and their practices. They are a non-profit organization that does not kill any of their animals and rely on donations and volunteers to run the program. If you are interested in volunteering or even just going in for a tour, check out their website: www.dehumane.org under the “Volunteer” section.

III. Ag Day

We will be teaching the art of balloon animals after spring break. For active membership we ask that you participate in at least one Saturday shift.

IV. Ag Day T-Shirts

V. Facts about Sheep
o Primary uses: meat, wool, dairy
o The sheep that we will have are dual-purpose Dorsets (used for both their meat and wool)
o Sheep are ruminant animals - they have 4 compartments of the stomach, just like the cow
o Life span: 6-11 years
o Fairly common for ewes to give birth to twins (especially when bred to produce many offspring).

VI. Officer Positions and Elections
We will take nominations on April 14th and elections will be April 21st. New officers will be shown the ropes so they can get some experience before they assume office.
Positions are: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and currently there are 2 Historian positions. However, there is a chance that we will just have 1 historian and 1 webmaster. A NESA leadership position is also under discussion. If you want more information about a specific executive board position, please contact the appropriate current officer (see information at the end of these minutes)

VII. Camping Trip
We are planning a camping trip in May. It will be half a weekend long and we ask that you bring $5-10 for food. More details to come.

VIII. Announcements
o Alpha Zeta interest meetings:
- Monday, March 8th, 7-8pm in the Perkins Scrounge
- Friday, March 12th, 3-4pm also in the Perkins Scrounge
There will be free pizza! Look for three girls wearing AZ t-shirts. Requirements to join are that you must be at least a second semester freshman in the Ag School and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. This is a national co-ed fraternity of the Ag School.

Animal Science Club Minutes 3/3/10

I. Active Membership Review
To be an active member, we ask that you:
o Attend 75% of meetings (extenuating circumstances, such as class or work, may be considered)
o Participate in at least 1 fundraising and 1 community service activity per semester
o Participate in at least one shift at Ag Day for ANSC Club (unless you are on the Ag Day committee/class)
o Serve on one committee per semester
o Pay a one-time National Block and Bridle fee and an annual due
Benefits of active membership include:
o Ability to vote and run for office
o Attend National and Regional conferences (ex. NESA)
o Trip discounts/attendance benefits (ex. end of year banquet)

II. Ag Day
Ag Day is set for April 24th (Saturday). We will have a petting zoo with a milking and sheep shearing demonstration. We plan to have dairy cattle, sheep, chickens, and chicks. We will also have face painting and balloon animals at a specific time of the day. Remember: we require ALL ANSC Club members to participate in at least one shift. Shifts will be Friday afternoon/evening (set up), (Saturday) 8:30-10am, 10-12, 12-2, and 2-4:30. Next week we will start sign ups and we will have a short info session during our meeting about sheep so please try to make it to the meeting!

III. Shirt Designs
We chose “Just moo it” with the nike symbol and cow pattern as our design and the club voted for a teal shirt with white writing. Prices TBA.

IV. Facts about Chicks (a baby chicken –get your mind out of the gutter)
o A hen takes 1 day to lay an egg
o Incubation time: 21 days
o There are more chicks than there are people in Delaware
o They have NO teeth, so they will swallow their food whole – remember from classes that chicks/chickens have two digestive stomach contraptions: the gizzard (physically grinds food) and the proventriculus (uses digestive enzymes to break down food).

o Next week, a speaker from the Delaware Humane Society will visit during the meeting
o VA Tech guest speaker will visit the club during our meeting on April 21.

T-shirt design ideas for Ag Day are due at our next meeting (March 3). We will be voting and choosing colors for the t-shirt at our next meeting, as well.

V. Relay for Life
The date for Relay for Life is Saturday, May 1. Try to keep the date open, especially if you are planning on attending.

VI. Announcements
o AgCC/FFA is hosting an Activities Night (an ice-cream social event) tonight (Thursday) from 8-10pm in the Townsend Commons to celebrate FFA week. This event is open to the entire Ag School
o The Spring Fling is next Thursday from 5:30-8pm, also in Townsend Hall. Go to support Garden for the Community – the cost is $10 for students (bring your ID). There will be soup and homemade bread, along with a live band.

We reviewed the requirements and benefits of being an active member of Animal Science Club. To be an active member, we ask that you:
o Attend 75% of meetings (extenuating circumstances, such as class or work, may be considered – please talk to Nicole if you are concerned)
o Participate in at least 1 fundraising and 1 community service activity per semester
o Participate in at least one shift at Ag Day for ANSC Club (unless you are on the Ag Day committee/class)
o Serve on one committee per semester
o Pay a one-time National Block and Bridle fee and an annual due
Benefits of active membership include:
o Ability to vote and run for office
o Attend National and Regional conferences (ex. NESA)
o Trip discounts/attendance benefits (ex. end of year banquet)

II. NESA
University of Rhode Island will be hosting the NESA competition this year. NESA is this weekend: February 19th (Friday) – February 21st (Sunday). Good luck and have fun to those who are attending.

III. Ag Day
Save the date! Ag Day is set for April 24th (Saturday). We will decide which animals we will have at our station at a later meeting as well as a t-shirt design. We will have face painting and balloon animals. Remember that we require all ANSC Club members to participate in at least one shift!

IV. Committee meetings (ideas/potential plans)
Service: Steve Cook’s farm help (April), Pat Carol (former ANSC club prez and current head of the DE Humane Society) guest speaker (March), collection drive for DE Humane Society
Social: end of year banquet – last day of classes (time and place to be announced)

Livestock: Herrs Factory visit, ostrich farm
Fundraising: yarn sale (possibly gift baskets, possibly knit scarves), Ag Day planning

V. Announcements
o AgCC First Meeting: February 22nd, 7pm in Townsend 009. AgCC is basically the backbone of the Ag College Clubs and they are looking for more members. They will also be looking for new officers soon. Definitely try to make it if you can.
o Ag Ambassador applications are being accepted – the deadline to submit should be sometime around the end of this month. For more information, contact Marissa Gilinsky (mgilinsky@gmail.com) or Nicole Aizaga (naizaga@udel.edu)

Animal Science Club Minutes 12/2/09

I. Treasurer’s Report:

II. Long t-shirts
The shirts are in! Nicole and Amanda will be stationed on various locations on campus in the next few days to hand out the long sleeve tees if you were unable to pick yours up today. Details on time and exact place are TBA.

III. NESA
University of Rhode Island will be hosting the NESA competition this year. NESA is February 19th (Friday) – February 21st (Sunday). This is basically a judging competition of various farm animals and a surprise “object” native to the area. There are more fun activities provided, for example, a dance. Although we are working on receiving funding, plan on paying about $90, which includes all meals, hotel, and travel costs except for food during the ride there and the ride back. If you would be able/ willing to drive to Rhode Island, please email Nicole Aizaga (naizaga@udel.edu) and Issey Chew-Chin (simonec@udel.edu) with how many TOTAL people you can fit in your car. You will be reimbursed for gas. IV. Dr. Riddle’s Farm (Equine)
We are going to Dr. Riddle’s Farm in Maryland THIS SATURDAY (December 5th). We are leaving from Lot 19 at 8:30am, so please be on time. Dr. Riddle is a highly respected and experienced equine veterinarian and is going to show us around his farm. Last year, we got to go inside the surgical area and see all the equipment. If you signed up, you will receive a confirmation email by Friday afternoon at the latest.

V. Yarn Fundraiser
We discussed the possibility of selling yarn, made from our sheep at UD. Final decisions are yet to be made.

VI. Longwood Gardens
Next week there is NO regular meeting. Instead, we will be going to the Longwood Lights to see the holiday displays and the festive gardens. I would suggest that you dress in layers, as there is both an outdoor and indoor component. Cameras are also highly encouraged. For those who are active members (in this case, if you receive the minutes, you are considered a member for this event), the trip will be paid for by the club. For friends of members who are not in the club, the fee is $3 provided that everyone brings their student IDs. Please, please, please don’t forget to bring your student ID so that we can get the discount (otherwise, the fee is $6 per person).

VII. Holiday Dinner at Dr. Griffiths
It is December 12th (Saturday) at 169 Fairview Road, Elkton, MD. We will be leaving from Lot 19 at 5:15pm. Everyone should have received the invite in a previous email attachment. See the invite for more details and if you have any questions, email Joanna at jlnajda@udel.edu.

VIII. Amazon Gift Wrap Fundraiser
It is on December 14th (Monday) from 1:30 – 5:30pm. We will get $1 for every gift that we wrap. This counts as a fundraiser, which goes toward active membership if you were not able to participate in the pumpkin sale. We still need more people to attend. IV. Dr. Riddle Equine Vet
We will be going to visit Dr. Riddle, a very well respected equine veterinarian, on December 5th (Saturday). This is a great opportunity to get a feel for large animal medicine and life as an equine veterinarian. We are leaving from Lot 19 at 8:30am. The last day to sign ups will be at the next meeting.

V. Longwood Gardens
This will be in place of our last meeting (on December 9th). For those who are not familiar with this landmark, Longwood is a botanical garden site that they light up for the holidays during the winter. The trip will be paid for by the club. We will be meeting at 5:30pm in Lot 19 that Wednesday.

VI. Holiday Dinner
It is an annual event, held at Dr. Griffith’s house. Specific time is to be announced.

Animal Science Club Minutes 11/4/09

I. Treasurer’s Report:

II. Pumpkin Sale Recap
The pumpkin sale was highly successful. We sold over 80 pumpkins with a profit of $863.50! Thank you to everyone who helped. Stuart Ramsey was kind enough to donate his purchased pumpkins, so today we signed a card for him and we have agreed as a club to donate a dinner gift certificate/night off from the farm as well.

III. Long Sleeve t-shirts
Today, Wednesday 11/4/09, was the last day to pay for the shirt. If you signed up but did not check yourself off as paid, expect an email from Amanda Otteni.

IV. Steve Cook’s Farm
We are going to Steve Cook’s Farm this Saturday (November 7th) to help him out. We are leaving from Lot 19 at 8:30 am sharp and should be back before 2pm. Lunch will be provided. You will receive a confirmation email if you signed up. If you would like to sign up (this mostly goes for those who cannot make the meetings) please email me by 12 pm on Friday. This qualifies as a service event.

V. Roller Skating
Sorry, but we did not have enough people signed up so we will have to cancel this trip… for now.

VI. Alpaca Farm
Next week we DO NOT have a regular meeting. Instead, we will be going to the Anderson’s Alpaca Farm! We will get the full work-up of what it takes to run an alpaca farm, breeding programs, and general information about alpacas. We will be leaving from behind Townsend Hall (from the parking lot) at 4pm next Wednesday, November 11th. We should be back around 8 or 9pm.

VII. Upcoming events
Longwood Gardens: In place of our last meeting (Dec. 9th), tickets tentatively $3
Amazon Gift Wrap: This is a fundraising event where we go to the Amazon warehouse and wrap presents for money. It will be sometime after Thanksgiving – exact dates still in decision.
Dr. Riddle: We will visit a well-known and respected equine veterinarian on December 5th. We will leave from Lot 19 at 8:30am. Sign ups will start at our next regular meeting.

VIII. Announcements
o MANRRS Meeting tomorrow at 5:30pm in Memorial Room 112. They are hosting a free GRE workshop this meeting. If you can’t make it, definitely try to make it to their next meeting (Nov. 19th at 5:30 in Memorial 112). They will have an interview workshop. IX. Here is an outline of what went down at the NC State’s Jeffrey Huckel’s talk, compliments of Kyle Clark. If you have any questions for Jeffrey Huckel, email Kyle (at KforceC@udel.edu) and he will consolidate your questions and give you Jeff’s response.
o 9 UD students applied in 2009
o 18 out of state seats with a total of 80 students/year
o about 500 out of state students apply, and about 200 in state
o 3.4GPA Cum/last 45 credit hours/prerequisite courses (out of state)
o VMCAS/Supplementals/GPA/GRE/Experience/ Letters of Recommendation
o for letters, get people who know you, and have them include examples of your character in their letters ex: how do they know you’re a responsible person?
o get your VMCAS done early if you can, and take your time on the supplemental applications
- a C- is the lowest grade they’ll accept for a prerequisite
o Make sure you’re done your prerequisite courses before your final semester... only two may be left until the Spring semester of your senior year.
- PLAN AHEAD... look at vet schools and make sure the classes they require are the classes you’re taking!!!
o NCSU offers all students “selectives” each year which can either be divided into 1 2wk session, or 2 1wk sessions. These “selectives” are hands-on, and often smaller classes which allow you to get some experience with an animal group or specialty of your choice BEFORE your 3rd/4th year.
--This helps when picking your “focus area” (of which there are 9).
-- You will graduate with a DVM, and can practice medicine on any animals, but focus areas give you a little bit more experience/specialization in that one area

III. Halloween Potluck Dinner
It is on Wednesday, October 28th at 5:30 pm at Ally, Marissa, and Amanda’s house (39 Center Street) in place of a regular meeting. Costumes are MANDATORY! You will receive an email, letting you know what you are bringing/letting you know that you signed up by Saturday night, so you will have plenty of time to prepare.

IV. Pumpkin Sale
The Pumpkin Sale is this coming Monday, October 26th (Monday) from 8am-5pm at Trabant. We are scooping ice cream for UD Dairy from 11am-1pm in exchange for 50% of their profits. You will receive an email with information on which shift(s) you are signed up for by Friday night. If there are any legitimate issues with your shift, please email me (simonec@udel.edu) by Sunday at the very latest.

The Ag Carnival was recapped. It was lots of fun and a great bonding experience in the face of rain and competitive teams. Congrats to the freshmen team, the winners of Ag Carnival. As for the auction, we raised $450 for Agribility.

III. Ag Carnival
This Saturday, October 10th, is the Ag Carnival. It will be from 10 am – 2 pm on the Webb Farm. We will probably be wearing the green or blue ANSC club t-shirts or the brown sweatshirt.

IV. Pumpkin Sale
The Pumpkin Sale will be on October 26th (Monday) from 8am-5pm. Please try to keep this day open and it’s not too early to start spreading the word. We will make posters in our committees before the sale.

V. Committee Meetings
Service: Freedom Hills (Horse Facility) needs helpers on weekends. Contact Steph Shapiro for more information (raindrop@udel.edu). Relay for Life is May 1st (we will join with PROUD for teams).
Livestock: Future events include: Alpaca Farm in November, possibly working with horses and goats in Smyrna, and a guest speaker on Nov. 16th. David Rama is going to speak about the Economy and the Dairy Industry at 7 pm in the Townsend Commons area (or room 132).
Pre-Vet: Possible future trips/events: Dr. Riddle (renown equine vet in Maryland) visit, Virginia Tech guest speaker (vet-school and graduate school), North Carolina State Veterinary Program Representative on Nov. 2nd.
Social: Roller skating, ice skating, restaurant, haunted house
Fundraising: print flyers for Pumpkin Sale, posters next week. Our Oct. 21st meeting is tentatively going to be held at Peace of Pizza on Main Street for the AgCC fundraiser.

VI. Announcements
o October 30th (Friday): Distinguished Alumni Celebration starting around 1pm. Linda is a UD alumnus, currently involved in animal collections for a zoo, and will be at the celebration. Feel free to stop by. If you would like more information, contact Dr. Griffiths (lesa@udel.edu)

Animal Science Club Minutes 9/23/09

I. Community Day
Thanks to those of you who came and helped out. We raised $85.26 and we voted to round this up to a $100 donation to Faithful Friends. We also listened to some good ideas for next year. Great job, everyone!

II. Ag Carnival
It is on October 10th (Saturday) from 10 am-2 pm (at Webb farm). The last day to sign up for this event is Wednesday Oct. 7th. If you are interested in attending, but cannot make it to Kilby Cream or the meeting on the 7th of October, just shoot me an email (simonec@udel.edu) with your (1) name and (2) phone number. The Ag clubs will all get together for some friendly competition in “day in the life of a farmer”, 3 legged race, dizzy bat, and more. We will also host the Agribility Auction (organized by the Social Committee).

III. Kilby Cream
Next week, we are going to Kilby Cream Ice Cream Parlor in place of a regular meeting (Wednesday Sept. 30th). Those of you who signed up should receive an email before next Wednesday. We will meet in Lot 19 at 5:15 pm.

IV. Garden for the Community
This will count as a service event on behalf of MANRRS. They will meet in front of Townsend Hall at 9am to do some gardening. All proceeds will go to the Food Bank of DE. Dress appropriately (sneakers, clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty, gloves if you have them).

V. Long sleeve t-shirt Design
We voted for our t-shirt design and decided on the Animals doing Science (wearing goggles). We will hold off on voting on colors for now. *If anyone has any connections and can get us long-sleeve tees, please email Nicole Aizaga (naizaga@udel.edu) with the information.

I. Community Day

Animal Science Club Minutes 9/9/09

I. Active Member Status

III. Cowtown Rodeo
We will meet in Lot 19 at 5 PM on September 19th for this ridiculously fun event. Sign-ups will continue next week and so far, we have 19 people signed up – it will be $10 if we get 25 people to sign up! (fyi) Lot 19 is located just north of Willard Hall, past the train tracks.

We explained the role of each of the committee chairs (livestock, social, service, pre-vet). The nominees will give a short speech at the next meeting and we will all vote for the committee chairs.

Animal Science Club Minutes 5/6/09

I. Treasurer’s Report:

II. Vince recapped our trip to Steve Cook’s farm to help out. Many jobs were accomplished, including putting up a tarp, rounding up calves, dehorning calves, and banding goats.

III. Camping trip - Cape Henlopen
o This Saturday, May 16th until Sunday, May 17th.
o Leaving from Lot 19 at 11am sharp, so please arrive a bit earlier. The site is about 2 hours away. We will leave early Sunday morning to come home.
o If you have any tents, it would be greatly appreciated if you brought them because we don’t have many.
o Remember, you must bring your own sleeping gear.
o Food will be provided for free. If you would like any personal snacks or have eating restrictions, please bring your own food.

IV. Garden for Community
o Volunteers are needed to help begin planting veggie gardens at the UD farm. It is located across from the dairy.
o If you volunteer, you will get free pizza and ice cream! Good deal!
o Times are: Friday, May 15th from 10am–5pm. Saturday, May 16th from 9am–2pm. Helping out for even one hour would be great if you can spare it.

V. End of the Year Banquet
o Our banquet will be this coming Wednesday, May 20th.
o It is in the upstairs of Deer Park Tavern on Main Street.
o Please arrive by 5:30pm, and it will run no later than 7:30pm.
o Please dress nicely.

VI. Announcements
o The Advisor Appreciation Luncheon is on Thursday, May 21st (Reading Day) in the Townsend Commons from 11:30–1pm. It is a time to recognize great academic and club advisors, and there will be free food.
o AgCC Study Break is on Tuesday, May 26th in the Townsend Commons from 6–8pm. There will be free food and drinks with a movie playing. We are sponsoring it by donating up to $85 to fund the event.

VII. Elections were held and a new Executive Board was voted into office for the coming year. Congratulations to the new execs!

III. Relay for Life was postponed and rescheduled for Saturday, May 16th. Unfortunately, the people who were signed up for it originally are now unable to go. Good job raising money though, it is still going to a great cause –The American Cancer Society.

IV. Camping trip:
o Cape Henlopen on May 16th. We have a 1pm reservation on Saturday through 12pm on Sunday, May 17th.
o We are leaving Lot 19 at 11am sharp on Saturday.
o If you have tents to bring, please do so. If you have one to lend to the club but you are not going, please email Lorna (lorna@udel.edu) and let her know. You can also bring it to next week’s meeting too.
o Everyone is responsible for bringing their own sleeping gear (pillow, sleeping bag, blankets, etc).
o If there are any other camping things you want to bring such as flashlights, games, etc, please feel free to do so!
o Food will be supplied for free, but you can bring extra snacks if you’d like.

VII. Nominations:
o Executive Board positions available are: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and two Historians.
o Presidential nominees must have served on the Executive Board or as a Committee Chairperson for a year prior.
o If you would like to nominate yourself or another person before next meeting, please email me (kkoenig@udel.edu) with a full name and position. You can also voice additional nominations at the beginning of next week’s meeting.
o If you are a nominee, please be prepared to stand up and give a short speech (why you would be best for the position chosen) next week.

VIII. Announcements:
o Since we won the AgCC attendance prize, we gained $110. The club voted to give back as much as $85 to them to fund the Finals Ag Study Break.
o There is a 4-H fundraiser at Piece-a-Pizza on Monday, May 18th. You need to hand in a coupon with your order for it to count. Coupons will be available at next week’s meeting and on Facebook.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 13th (our last one this year!).
It will be at 5:30pm in 111 Memorial Hall.

Animal Science Club Minutes 4/29/09

I. We welcomed a guest speaker, Susan Garey, to talk with us about Extension work. If you have any questions for her or would like to contact her, her email is truehart@udel.edu and her phone number is (302) 730-4000.

II. Treasurer’s Report:

o o Ag Day earnings: $779.25! Great job everyone; this is the highest amount of donations we have recorded in Dawn’s records. We also won 2nd place overall for our awesome exhibit!

III. Ag Day suggestions:
A few suggestions were made at our meeting to make next year’s Ag Day even better. Some ideas brought up were: using 2 big tents rather than 1 big and 1 small, have more facepainting supplies and chairs, purchasing a portable microphone for demonstrations.

IV. Service opportunities:
o Volunteer with Renee Luther the week of May 11th. Times are Tuesday 10-12pm, 1-3pm. Wednesday 10:30-1:30pm, 5-8pm. Thursday 5:30-8:30pm. All day Saturday. We are looking for 5-10 people to go to each lesson and each group must have a driver.
o Steve Cook’s farm help on May 9th. Clean up loose hay and straw, refill barns, dehorn calves, put up shade cloth and sprinkler systems, and open up barn windows.

V. Relay for Life:
Relay is this Saturday, May 2nd. If you are signed up to participate, please keep a lookout for an email with information later in the week. If you are not signed up and want to come hang out for a while and eat snacks, feel free to join us! Donations are very welcome at the event.

VI. Banquet:
Our end of the year banquet is now being held at Deer Park Tavern on Main Street, rather than Kildare’s. The time is still 5:30pm on Wednesday, May 20th. Tonight was the last night to sign up. The menu includes a buffet with stuffed chicken, stuffed shells, and assorted salads. Also, since we made so much money on Ag Day, the banquet will be free for all active members! Hooray!

VII. Upcoming elections!
The executive board positions available are: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and 2 Historians. We will hold nominations next meeting (May 6th) and have elections on May 13th. If you would like to be nominated or nominate someone and will not be at next week’s meeting, please send your request in with someone else or email me (kkoenig@udel.edu) to let me know. Remember, to run for the position of President, you must have been an executive board member or committee chair person for a year prior.

VIII. Announcements:
o We won 1st place in AgCC’s participation contest! For a prize, we gained half of their Pie-in-the-Face earnings from Ag Day. Good job everyone!

II. Baltimore Aquarium Recap
We went to the Baltimore Aquarium this past Saturday. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed walking around, seeing the Dolphin Show, and getting the “4-D Experience”. If anyone has parking receipts that need to be reimbursed, please hand them into Dawn as soon as possible. If you have pictures from this event, please email them to our historians, Ally (afetsko@udel.edu) or Michelle (mlapera@udel.edu). You can also put them on a CD or flash drive and bring them to a meeting.

III. Ag Day T-shirts
o They are $8 each.
o The money is due no later than next Wednesday, March 25th.
o If you have not signed up for one and still want to, you can either sign up next week and pay at the same time, or email me (kkoenig@udel.edu) with your name and shirt size to speed up the process.

IV. Next meeting details:

Tonight, we met at Grotto’s Pizza on Main Street to support AgCC’s fundraising efforts!

Animal Science Club Minutes 3/4/09

I. Treasurer’s Report:

II. NESA Recap
This past weekend was really fun. We stayed in 2 different hotels and woke up early every morning, so it was quite tiring as well. We competed in livestock judging (the mystery animals were Labrador Retrievers), Quiz Bowl, paper presentations, and original research. We had a great banquet, and some of us braved the dance (aka hoedown) afterwards.
We had a lot of winners this year, including:
o 9th Place in Quiz Bowl: Adam, Sarah, Seth, Kelly
o 4th Place in Quiz Bowl: Dan, Dawn, Kim, Julia, Amanda
o 2nd Place in original research: Lorna
o Livestock judging improved overall!

III. Ag Day!
o T-shirts: The design chosen will be a cow and chickens with the saying “Brown Chicken Brown Cow” on the back, with the circular crest on the front left. The colors will be a light blue shirt with brown writing and pictures. We will begin sign ups next week.
o Animals: Each committee will need to make a poster for each type of animal. This is be completed by the end of March.
o Balloon animal training: Dan will teach anyone interested how to make balloon animals after a regular meeting sometime in April.
o Shifts for Ag Day will be as follows: 8:30–10am, 10–12pm, 12–2pm, 2–4:30pm. There will also be a shift the Friday before for general setup. We will start sign ups on March 25th, so please try to have an idea what shift you can do by then.

IV. Committee Chair updates:
o Pre-Vet:
 Baltimore Aquarium trip on Saturday, March 14th. It will be $16.95 per person to see the aquarium, dolphin show, and behind the scenes. We are leaving Lot 19 at 10am, and enter the aquarium at 12:30pm. I. Amazon Gift Wrap fundraiser

II. Livestock Trip

o AZ Mitten Tree: Please donate new or gently used winter-wear (hats, mittens, gloves, scarves, etc) to the Mitten Tree in the Townsend Commons. All donations will be given to the Salvation Army. It will be in the Commons unril December 12th.
o AZ Grotto’s Fundraiser: Head over to Grotto’s on Wednesday, December 10th between 4-9pm and purchase some food or drink to support AZ’s fundraising effort for the Salvation Army. In order to donate some of your bill to AZ, you must present a coupon to your server (you can print one out online from their Facebook group or you can ask members for coupons if you plan on going).

We began collecting money for our club sweatshirts this meeting. Remember, they are $15 each and you can pay with cash or a check to “Animal Science Club”. Please get your money in as soon as possible so we can order them.

III. Recaps:
o Milburn Orchards: We went apple picking, ate delicious apple cider doughnuts with apple cider, and shopped around the market. If you have any pictures please send them to Ally (afetsko@udel.edu) or Michelle (mlapera@udel.ed).
o Pumpkin Sale: Our sale was a huge success! We made $578 in total, great work everyone! Also, we will be passing around a thank you card at our next meeting for Scott Ramsey, who donated all of the pumpkins and other goods for free!
o Halloween Potluck: We ate good food, watched awesome movies, and had a great time at 54 New London, whether you were in costume or not. If you have any pictures please send them to Ally (afetsko@udel.edu) or Michelle (mlapera@udel.ed).

IV. Steve Cook’s farm
o We are going to Steve Cook’s farm to volunteer our time and hard work on Sunday, November 16th.

VII. Longwood Gardens
o We are going on our annual trip to Longwood Gardens, to see the “magical” botanical gardens decorated for the holidays.
o We are going on the last day of classes, December 10th at 5:30pm instead of our normal meeting. Signups will be started on a later date, and we will carpool there.

VIII. NESA Registration
o NESA will be held on February 27-28th, 2009 at UConn.
o We participate in livestock judging, quizbowl, and presentations.
o We are starting interest signups next week because we need to register early since we won’t be together in the winter. Please check the dates and sign up if you can make it.

o Therapeutic Riding Center: Holly got information on a center not too far from here that accepts help with lessons. They need volunteers Wednesdays through Fridays, at least five people at a time. II. The Ag Carnival was recapped. It was a lot of fun competing against the rest of the Ag School, including the grad student team and especially the professor team! If you have any pictures from the event, please email them to one of our historians (mlapera@udel.edu or afetsko@udel.edu) or bring them into next week’s meeting on a CD or flash drive. The AgrAbility Auction was a huge success, and we raised $940 for the cause! Great job everyone!

III. Sweatshirts
o We voted on a design for the Animal Science Club sweatshirts. The front will be our club name surrounded by various farm animals, while the back will have animal tracks crossing over it.
o The colors the club voted on were: brown sweatshirt with sky blue printing
o Each unisex hooded sweatshirt will be $15.
o Sign ups were started this week, and will be available next week as well. If you would like, you can sign up for one via email by sending kkoenig@udel.edu your name and sweatshirt size.

II. Rob recapped our trip to Kilby Cream last week. We had a great time seeing the animals, getting lost in a corn maze, eating delicious ice cream, and visiting the milking parlor. We are planning on getting a thank you card for their kindness (they opened on a Wednesday night just for us!) and will bring it to club to sign.

III. Ag Carnival
o This Saturday, October 4th from 10am–2pm at Webb Farm.
o We have 3 teams participating, which are made already. But, if you would still like to join it is not too late. Please email me at kkoenig@udel.edu.
o Those that are going, please meet in Lot 19 at 9:15am to carpool. If you have a car, please help us out.
o Our events we are hosting: Day in the Life of a Farmer, Animal Noises, Dizzy Izzy

IV. Pumpkin Sale

V. Sweatshirt Ideas
While we figure out a deal on the prices, please sketch any design ideas you have and bring them to the next meeting. We will vote on a design and begin signing up for them.

VI. Milburn Orchards
Kishana announced that we have a trip to Milburn Orchards for apple picking planned for Sunday, October 19th. It will be $8 per person to pick apples, and we are going to begin signups next week.

VII. Announcement:
The following is a portion of an email we received:
“I am a kindergarten teacher at Bank of America Child Development Center and we are having a fall festival on Tuesday October 28 from 9–12. We are looking for Ag Ambassadors that could come out that could tell out preschool and kindergarten children about the farm and agriculture. We are open to any ideas because we are trying to go in a different direction for out fall family event. My classroom has been to the farm and loved being with the students. Any help would be appreciated.”

Animal Science Club Minutes 9/17/08

I. Community Day
Thank you to everyone who participated and helped out at our tent! We raised $39.07 for the Delaware Humane Society, but the club voted to increase our donation to a flat $50. We are making up the difference using the club’s account money. Pat Carol, who works with the DE Humane Society, is our club’s founding father, and could be a potential speaker, personally came to our tent and thanked us for our donation.

II. Dues
Every year, members pay one fee to the Animal Science Club. These can be turned into our treasurer, Dawn, as soon as possible. You must pay dues to be an active member of the club, which lets you participate in NESA, attend the end of the year banquet, vote in club elections, and other various things.
o New members – $15
o Returning members – $10
o This can be paid in cash or a check made out to “Animal Science Club”

III. Cowtown Rodeo!
We are going to Cowtown Rodeo this Saturday, September 20th. We will meet at 5:00pm in Lot 19 to carpool there. Please try to make it on time so we can get there early enough to buy our group tickets and see the opening celebration. It will be $10 to get in because we have more than 25 people going.

IV. Kilby Cream

V. Ag Carnival
Ag Carnival will be held on Saturday, October 4th from 10am – 2pm. Teams of 6 to 10 people will be randomly made, and we will compete in all sorts of fun games against other Ag clubs and organizations! For each team we need to contribute an event, and ours are as follows: Day in the Life of a Farmer, Animal Noises (with blindfolds), and Dizzy Izzy. We will also host the AgrAbility Auction, in which we need items to auction off. The social committee is currently working on formulating a letter to ask businesses to donate to the cause. If you are interested in helping out, please contact the social chair, Holly Powers (hpowers@udel.edu).

VI. AgCC
The Agricultural College Counsel meets every other Tuesdays (odd numbered days) to discuss the social goings-on of the Ag School. They host many events including Ag Carnival. Study Breaks, and Socials. The Animal Science Club would like to send 2 – 3 representatives each meeting and get our voices heard! This is a fantastic leadership opportunity, and will earn AgCC points for our club (so we can have a shot at winning a prize!). If you are interested in being a representative for one or more meetings, please email Lorna at lorna@udel.edu and let her know.

I. Dues

All proceeds made at our table will be donated to the Delaware Humane Society.
We signed up for shifts at this meeting. If you signed up, expect a reminder email in the next day or so.

III. Cowtown Rodeo!
We are going to Cowtown Rodeo Saturday, September 20th. We will meet at 5:00pm in Lot 19 to carpool there. It will be $10 to get in if 25+ people sign up, but we don’t think that will be a problem.

You can either send me your speech to read to the club or give it to someone who will be there and is willing to read it on your behalf.

V. Fundraising Idea: Pumpkin Sale!
On the week of Halloween, we are holding a pumpkin sale on the Trabant patio. We can purchase each good-sized pumpkin from a farm for about $5. On a later date, we can agree on prices, shifts, and advertisement as a club, so start brainstorming!

III. Harrington Raceway

o Costs are still up in the air due to miscommunication. Dinner was going to be around $12, but it might be covered. Admission has also not been determined, so keep a lookout for an email letting you know these details.

Animal Science Club Minutes 5/7/08

Today we had a wonderful meeting out on the North Green in the amazing weather!

I. Treasurer’s Report:

II. Nicole recapped our club’s participation at Relay for Life this past weekend. It was really fun and all proceeds went to a great cause – The American Cancer Society. Our club raised a huge $1,182.50 and UD raised over $125,000! Great job everyone!!

III. Grotto’s Fundraiser
o Tomorrow, Thursday May 8th from 4-9pm!
o Hand out flyers to everyone you know to get 20% of their bill forwarded to the Animal Science Club!

IV. Harrington Raceway Trip
o Join us on a trip to Harrington Raceway with Susan Garey, who will bring us on a behind the scenes tour. Also, a buffet style dinner will be included in the cost.

Animal Science Club Minutes 4/30/08

I. We welcomed Dr. Dallatore, a veterinarian from Windcrest Animal Clinic to speak with us about his career as a general practice veterinarian. He shared a typical day at the clinic with us as well as talked about vet school.

II. Treasurer’s Report:

III. Ag Day was recapped. We made $496 and our exhibit won first place overall! Everyone did a fantastic job and was really enthusiastic, making this year one of the best. Thanks to everyone who helped out, it was greatly appreciated!

III. Ag Day!

Animal Science Club Minutes 4/9/08

II. Philly Zoo trip: Sunday, April 13th
o We will be meeting in Lot 19 at 9:30am sharp, and the zoo is about an hour’s drive away.
o The cost will be less than $10. Your ticket will include admission, a primate training demonstration, and a “meet the trainer” talk.
o Please bring your cameras to take fun pictures for our historians to put in the scrapbook!

III. Ag Day!
o The t-shirts have been ordered and will be $10. Please give Dawn money if you ordered one and she will check you off.
o The shirts will be distributed the Wednesday before Ag Day.

o Our t-shirt design is finally done and the final “Top 10” list was written on the board.

Animal Science Club Minutes 3/19/08

I. Treasurer’s Report:

II. We recapped helping out on Steve Cook’s farm this past Sunday.

III. Philly Zoo trip
o We will be visiting the Philly Zoo either on April 13th or 20th.
o The club will ultimately vote on the date.
o It will be $200 for a group, so if we get at least 20 people together it will only be $10 each.
o Trip will include some behind-the-scenes tours and talks.

IV. Guest Speaker: Exotic Animal Veterinarian
o Dr. Dallatore is joining us on April 30th (regular meeting time) to give a lecture on his career as a veterinarian specializing in exotics.

V. Relay for Life
o Keep an eye out for an email from Jessie about registering for Relay for Life if you have signed up for it.

VI. Harrigton Raceway trip
o The club has voted the date of May 18th.
o We will go watch the races as well as get some behind-the-scenes action.

VII. Ag Day!

o We also passed around a sheet to sign up for shifts at Ag Day as well. The shifts are as follows: 8-10am, 10-12pm, 12-2pm, and 2-4:30pm. You must sign up for one of these to be an active member. Also, there are a couple spots left on Friday around 2pm to help set up. Please note that if you do this shift, you still need to do one on Saturday. The shift sign up will be available at our meeting next week.
o We will be working on Ag Day posters at the next meeting. Each committee will pick ones to work on so we can get them all done before break.

o Since editing our constitution using last week’s suggestions, the club voted and it has passed.

IV. Ag Day! (Saturday, April 26th from 10am-4pm)
o T-shirts

 We will vote on the suggestions collected last week for the “Top 10 Reasons you Love Animal Science”. Please email Jen (jenp@udel.edu) with your top 5 votes so we can have them ready for next meeting.
 We will begin the signups for the t-shirts at next week’s meeting, and keep in mind they will cost about $10 each.
o Shifts
 The shifts will be as follows: 8:30-10:00am, 10:00-12:00pm, 12:00-2:00pm, and 2:00-4:30pm.
 Also, we need at least 5 people to help out on the Friday before to help set up Ag Day. This will not count as a shift for the club though.
 Sign ups will start at next week’s meeting, so think about what shift will work with your schedule.

 Lisa has volunteered to make a new poster with easy facepainting options. Thanks!
 We are currently asking for extra tables and chairs so we can paint more faces at one time

V. Club Constitution
As a club, the revisions on the old constitution were discussed and corrected. Next week we will be voting on the changes to solidify a new constitution for the club. III. Committee events updates
o Pre-vet: Waiting on dates for a trip to the Philly Zoo as well as a visit from an exotic veterinarian
o Livestock: Waiting on a date for a tour of the new UD milking parlor
o Service: We are helping at Steve Cook’s farm on Sunday, March 16th. We will have sign-ups at an upcoming meeting.
o Fundraising: Anticipating a carwash when the weather gets warmer
o Social: Instead of a meeting in Memorial next week, we are holding a short meeting at California Tortilla and then a social dinner 

IV. Banquet
Our end of the year banquet is scheduled, so mark it on your calendars! It is on the last day of classes, Wednesday, May 21st. It will be at 6:00pm at Kate’s on Main Street.

V. Ag Day!
o Ag Day is on Saturday, April 26th, from 10am-4pm.
o The theme will be Sustaining Life from Soil to Sky.
o We are collecting T-shirt ideas now for the “Top 10 Reasons We Love Animal Science”. We also need a color scheme for the shirts. Please email Jen (jenp@udel.edu) with any sayings/color ideas, and she can compile them and bring them to attention at upcoming meetings.
o We are planning on having dairy cattle, sheep, and chickens (plus a Blue Hen) at our site. Plus, Dr. Griffiths suggested we could possibly use her pigmy goats and possibly one of her horses for our display as well.
o We will check the posters from last year to see which ones can be reused, and plan to make new ones for this year.
o We are also planning on having demonstrations throughout the day including sheep sheering, sheep hoof trimming, and cow milking.
o Facepainting will be available for the kids.
o We will discuss and vote next week on whether or not we should make balloon animals as well.
o Remember, to be an active member of the club, you must help one shift at Ag Day. Signups will circulate at the meeting 2 weeks from now.

VI. We held nominations and elections for a new Social Chair position. Dan Lantz is now our new Social Committee Chair for the rest of the year, congratulations!

VII. There were three important announcements at the end of our meeting. They are as follows:
o Tomorrow, Thursday, February 28th, is the AgCC Ag Spring Social! There will be free pizza and soda, and everyone in the Ag College is invited. It will be in the Trabant Multipurpose Room B from 6:30-8:30pm, hope to see you there!
o Ag Ambassador applications are due this Friday, February 29th. Please bring them to 104 Townsend. If you have any questions, email Jen (jenp@udel.edu).
o PROUD is holding a fundraiser at Friendly’s (down South College Ave) on Tuesday, March 4th. The club needs at least 100 people to come purchase something, even if it is a soda or scoop of ice cream, to get proceeds. Please come out to help out your fellow club members Cheri and Rocket!

III. Club Sweatshirts
We have to have a design and colors ready go by March 26th, so we can order them in time. If you have any ideas or suggestions for either, email Michelle (mlapera@udel.edu) and let her know what you think please.

IV. Club Newsletter
Stacy and Michelle released the rough copy for our club newsletter. The club revised it and it is now almost ready to go!

V. Constitution
Attached to this same email is the current club constitution with comments on it. We are planning on voting about these changes at next week’s meeting. Please read over it, and email Jen (jenp@udel.edu) with any comments or concerns.

VI. Kickball Tourney
AgCC is sponsoring a kickball tournament, and we are going to try to put together a team or two to compete! We can make our own shirts and go up against other clubs to make Animal Science Club proud! Date and time to be announced at a later date.

VII. Ag Day T-shirts
We decided that the colors for the Ag Day shirts will be brown with light blue writing. If you have ideas or feelings on this, email Marissa (marissag@udel.edu) and let her know!

VIII. Committee reports and upcoming events
o Livestock: Susan Garey volunteered to talk to us and take us to the Delaware Racetrack for a behind-the-scenes look. Also, we are scheduling a tour of UD’s new milking parlor.
o Service: We will be helping Steve Cook at his farm again this March on either the 15th or 16th. We will also have a speaker from AgrAbility come talk to us. Later in May, a possible clean-up of Webb Farm is in order and/or a White Clay Creek clean up. Also, there is interest in Relay for Life on May 3rd.
o Pre-Vet: An exotic vet is planning on coming to talk with us in March, possibly followed by a surgeon. Also, the Philly Zoo trip is being planned as well as the UPenn vet panel.
o Fundraising: Plans for a Car Wash are scheduled for April sometime, as well as maybe a fundraiser at Ag Day or on Main Street.
o Social: The meeting on March 5th is going to be a dinner-meeting somewhere close. We will vote on the location next week, so think of places you’d like to go! Also, we were thinking about having a movie night, a picnic when it gets warmer, a bowling or ice skating night, and/or and ice cream social. Lots of fun things coming up!

o Set-up will start at 9am, and clean-up will go until 5pm.
o Shifts are 2 hours long each: 9-11am, 11-1pm, 1-3pm, 3-5pm.
o This year’s theme is: Sustaining Life from Soil to Sky
o We will have sheep (shearing and hoof trimming), a dairy cow (milking) and dairy calf, and chickens.
o We will use some old posters from past Ag Days, but we will have to make a few more – including one on the new UD milking parlor.
o We will also have face painting and possibly balloon animals (Dan Lantz is willing to teach those who want to make balloon animals).
o We are also getting t-shirts made, with the theme “Top 10 Reasons You Know You are an Animal Science Major”. Think of suggestions for reasons and bring them to later meetings for voting and/or discussion, because we need to have a final design by 3/19.
o Remember, to be an active member in the club, you must help one shift!

V. End of the year banquet
The banquet will be held this year at Kate’s on Main Street again because it worked out so well there last year. It will either be held the last day of classes, 5/21, or the Friday beforehand, 5/16, so keep your schedules open 

VI. Club Sweatshirts
Since there is an interest in Animal Science Club sweatshirts, we should decide on a design by March 26th. They will be black with bright/light blue writing, with our club name on the front and a design on the back. The design is up for debate, so bring your ideas to the next couple meetings or email them to Michelle at mlapera@udel.edu.

The club constitution is currently being revised, and it must be done by this spring. Each change that is made must be voted upon by the whole club, so we will begin to vote and discuss changes in the upcoming meetings. When it is completed, I will send out a completely revised copy.

Animal Science Club Minutes 11/28/07

I. Treasurer’s Report:

II. Our trip to the Camden Aquarium was recapped. If you have any pictures from the event, please send them to Stacy (sgreen@udel.edu) or Michelle (mlapera@udel.edu) so they can use them in the scrapbook!

III. Speaking of the scrapbook, Stacy and Michelle are in desperate need of other club pictures as well, such as the carwash and community day. Even if your pictures are from other events, please please please send them to our historians!

IV. Longwood Gardens:
We are visiting Longwood Gardens on Wednesday, December 5th! We will be meeting in Lot 19 at 5:30pm to carpool there. Admission will be about $3. Make sure you dress warmly because we will be outside a good portion of the time! If you would like to sign up, please email me (kkoenig@udel.edu) with your name, cell phone number, and if you can drive/how many.

V. Amazon Gift Wrap:
We are meeting for the fundraiser with Amazon wrapping gifts on Thursday, December 6th from 2-6pm. It is on Reading Day, so there are no classes that day. We were notified that everyone must wear closed-toe shoes with no heels, and long hair must be pulled back. We will meet in Lot 19 to carpool, and the time will be announced in an email that Dawn will send out to those going.

VI. Holiday Dinner:
Our Holiday Dinner at Dr. Griffiths’ house will now be on Sunday, December 2nd. **Please note this date has been changed!** We will meet at 3pm in Lot 19 to carpool there, and arrive around 3:30pm. We will also be having a gift exchange for those who want to participate. If you would like to participate, a good gift to buy, wrap, and bring should be about $5. If you want to come, please email me (kkoenig@udel.edu) with your name, cell phone number, and if you can drive/how many. If you have signed up and can't make it anymore because of the date change, please email me letting me know you will not be attending.

VII. AgCC Study Break:
AgCC is hosting a study break from finals! It will start at 8pm on Monday, December 10th. It will be held in Townsend Commons, and there will be free food to enjoy with your friends while you take a breather from studying.

VIII. NESA (Regionals):
Regionals this year will be held at Del Val College (close!) on the weekend of February 22-24th. There will be livestock judging, presentations, quizbowl, awards, a banquet, and a dance party! If you would like to sign up, please email Danielle (dsmarsh@udel.edu) to let her know by this Friday, November 30th. If you are signed up to go, money for registration is due by Monday, December 10th. It is $65, and can be dropped off in the mailbox at 104 Townsend.

IX. Collegiate 4H
The first meeting of the Collegiate 4H club is being held tomorrow, Thursday, November 29th. People will be meeting at 7pm in the Trabant food court. If you have any questions about this club, contact Danielle (dsmarsh@ude.edu).

This was our last meeting of the semester! Hopefully we will see each other at some of the upcoming events, but if not, have a wonderful break and see you in February when we start up meetings again! 

III. Camden Aquarium Trip:
We are going to the Camden Aquarium this Saturday, November 17th! We will be meeting in Lot 19 at 10am to carpool. If you have a car, please bring it! It will be $13 per person, but make sure you bring some extra money to buy lunch there. Also, parking is about $7 per car, but if you keep your receipt and bring it back to club, we will reimburse you your money. If you haven’t signed up yet, please let me know asap and I will add you to the list. If you are signed up and can’t make it, please email me as well.

IV. Longwood Gardens Trip:
Sign ups were passed around for our annual trip to Longwood Gardens on the last day of classes instead of a meeting. It is on Wednesday, December 5th. We will be meeting in Lot 19 at 5:30pm to carpool there. Admission will be free! *If you can’t make it to Longwood Gardens with us and still want to go, the Horticulture Club is going as well on November 29th. III. Our Halloween party last Wednesday was recapped. There was great food, great costumes, and a lot of fun. If anyone has any pictures from the event, please send them to Stacy at sgreen@udel.edu or Michelle at mlapera@udel.edu so they can sort through them for the scrapbook!

IV. Movie Night:
Tomorrow night, Thursday November 8th, is AgCC Movie Night! “Super Size Me” will be shown in 132 Townsend Hall at 7pm. It is co-hosted by us and the Food Science Club, and free chips and drinks will be provided. Feel free to bring a pillow and get cozy!

V. Steve Cook Trip:
We will be going to Steve Cook’s farm to help out this Saturday, November 10th. We are meeting and leaving at 8:15am in Lot 19, but please show up earlier. We will be unloading hay, spreading stone, dehorning calves, fixing up calf hutches, setting up for farrowing and kidding, and maybe halter breaking animals. We will also get some practice for Regionals and Nationals with livestock judging. A free lunch will be provided, and make sure to dress very warm in layers!

VI. Aquarium Trip:

It will be $13 per person, but bring extra money to buy lunch when we are there. Hopefully we can pay for parking through the club, but we will let you know on a later date.

VII. Future Events:
 Amazon Gift Wrap – go to set place and make money for each gift wrapped; possibly done the 1st or 2nd weekend in December
 Holiday Dinner – at Dr. Griffiths’ house in December, date and time TBA

Halloween Party
We will be holding our Halloween Party in place of a regular meeting next week (Oct. 31st at 6:30). The party will be at Jen and Danielle’s house (54 New London Rd) and costumes are STRONGLY recommended. This will be a potluck dinner. We had sign ups for food, if you would like to sign up for something, email Chelsea (cberdolt@udel.edu).

Steve Cook Trip
We will be having our fall trip to Steve Cook’s farm on Saturday, November 10th. We will be meeting at 8:15 in lot 19. Some of the things we may be doing are unloading hay, spreading stone, dehorning calves, fix up calf hutches, set up for farrowing and kidding, may halter break and vaccinate. After this, we will have some livestock judging in preparation for NESA. If you want to sign up, please email Jessie (jessilou@udel.edu)

Zoo/Aquarium Trip
We have been in talks with Philly Zoo, Baltimore Aquarium, and Camden Aquarium. Baltimore Aquarium would just be a tour and would be $20/person, $23/person with dolphin show. Camden is $13/person for group rate, and we could possibly get behind the scene. Philly Zoo would be $12/person on the group rate.
The trip is planned for November 17th, and we would like to know where we would like to go, we will be voting on where we will be going at the next business meeting.

Other News
Thursday November 8, Food Science Club is hosting a movie night in Townsend. They will be showing Fast Food Nation at 7pm. It will be in either the commons or 132. There will be snacks and beverages.

Next Meeting
We will have our next business on Weds, Nov 7th in 111 Memorial Hall at 5:30. We will be having committee meetings. Chairs will be meeting at 4:45.

Animal Science Club Minutes 10/17/07

II. Dues:
There are still a handful of people who have not turned in dues to Dawn yet. It is $15 for new members, and $10 for returning members. Remember, you must pay dues to be an active member of the club. If you haven’t turned them in yet, please get them to Dawn as soon as possible, preferably by the next meeting.

III. Ag Carnival was recapped. We made $453 for AgrAbility through the auction and one of our teams placed 2nd overall! It was a beautiful day and everyone had a great time, thanks for coming out!
Our social outing to Damon’s Grill was recapped as well.

IV. Milburn Orchards:
We are going to go to Milburn Orchards this Saturday, October 20th! There will be apple picking, pumpkin picking, and other fun fall activities. We will be meeting in Lot 19 at 12 noon to carpool, and will be leaving at 12:15pm sharp.

V. Halloween Party:
On Halloween, Wednesday, October 31st, we are having a Halloween pot luck dinner at Danielle and Jen’s house! It will be at 6:30pm, and costumes are required! An interest sign up sheet was passed around at tonight’s meeting, but the real sign up sheet will circulate next week. On that, you can sign up to bring items and food for the party.

VI. Announcement:
Animal Rescue Inc., a no kill shelter, is holding a raffle and tickets are on sale for $2 each. Third prize is $100, second prize is $250, and first prize is $500! The drawing will be on November 26th. You can buy tickets from Amanda Brophy. To contact her to buy tickets or with any questions, email her at abrophy@udel.edu.

III. Newark Community Day was recapped. In total, we made $130.42 for Faithful Friends, a no-kill animal shelter.

IV. Our other events were recapped as well, including our trips to Kilby Cream, Cowtown Rodeo, and our speaker from NC State, Jeff Huckel.

V. The Ag Carnival and AgrAbility Auction will be held this Saturday, October 6th, from 10am-3pm! Registration is at 9:30am, so we will meet in Lot 19 at 9:15am to carpool to Webb Farm.
Ag Carnival:
-There will be 3 teams of mixed members, and the list is attached to this email.
-If you have old Ag Day t-shirts, please bring them to Ag Carnival so we can match.
-Our event will be Day in the Life of a Farmer. Directions and rules of this game are also attached to this email.
AgrAbility Auction:
-The auction will begin at 12 noon, with registration at 11:45am. Please bring money if you’d like to bid on the prizes.

VI. Committees met and discussed future events and activities. Chair people then reported back to the club:
a. Fundraising: Anticipating the Amazon giftwrap in the end of November. Thinking about participating in a fund raiser at one of the various places on Main Street.
b. Social: Anticipating social dinner meeting next week at Damon’s Grill. Possibly a hayride/pumping picking event was discussed on or around October 20th. Also, there will be a Halloween costume party at Danielle’s house on Halloween, with details to come later.
c. Pre-vet: On Saturday, November 17th, a trip to the Philadelphia Zoo or Baltimore Aquarium was discussed. Also, we could get a group of us together and train at the Delaware Humane Society to volunteer there.
d. Service: AgrAbility Auction prizes were discussed. Working on getting a pet therapy speaker in to talk with us. Also, the Main Street Mile is October 20th, which we might like to participate in.
e. Livestock: Looking into getting an animal behaviorist to come speak to us. We will also practice livestock judging when we visit Steve Cook’s farm, with details to come later.

VII. Next week’s meeting (Wednesday, October 10th) will be a social dinner at Damon’s Grill! We will meet at 5:30pm in Lot 19 to carpool, and will leave no later than 5:45pm.

III. The Car Wash this past weekend was a lot of fun and we made $235.75. Thanks for volunteering your time!

IV. The Ag Fall Social will be held this Thursday, September 13th from 6-9pm. It is open to all Ag students and faculty, and representatives from all Ag clubs will be there. It will be in the Rodney Room in Perkins student center, and there will be free pizza and soda!

V. Newark Community Day is this Sunday, September 16th, from 10am-5pm. We began the sign up sheet last week, but we still have slots to fill, so please email me and kkoenig@udel.edu to sign up. The shifts are: 9:30-11am, 11am-12:30pm, 12:30-2pm, 2-3:30pm, and 3:30-5pm. We will face paint as well as run the goldfish bowl toss game. Goldfish coupons from Pet Kare II will be prizes.

VI. We will be going to Kilby Cream next Wednesday, September 19th instead of our meeting. We will meet in Lot 19 at 5:30pm, and will leave at 5:45pm. We will have the options to see the calves, milking parlor, where the cows are fed, and where the ice cream is made.

IX. The Ag Carnival and the AgrAbility Auction are on Saturday, October 6th, from 10am-3pm. We will be making about 3 teams of 6-10 people. We need to host an event, so if you have any ideas bring them to the next meeting. We are leaning towards “Day in the Life of a Farmer” if it isn’t taken yet. For the AgrAbility Auction, we will need to think about asking stores on Main Street to donate prize baskets or gift certificates for the auction.

We also made posters to holdup at the car wash. This event is not mandatory, but to be an active member you must attend at least one fundraising activity. If you do not have a car or means of getting there, we will be carpooling from the Russell parking lot. Dawn will send out and email with details.

V. The Ag Fall Social will be held on Thursday, September 13th from 6-9pm. It is open to all ag students and faculty, and representatives from all ag clubs will be there. It will be in the Rodney Room in Perkins student center, and there will be free pizza and soda!

Ag Day Recap
Ag Day went very well. We had a dairy cow and calf, two ewes and four lambs, and four piglets. The animals were a big hit as was the face painting. We discussed what we did well and what can be improved for next year. We also came in second for our display. We made about $421 in donations!

Banquet
With the money that we got from donations at Ag Day, we were able to drop the banquet price from $15 to $10. If you are planning on going to banquet, please bring your $10 by next week.

Picture CD
If you are interested in getting a picture CD of what we have done during the year, let Stacy know (sgreen@udel.edu). The method of distribution has yet to be decided.

Ag Day
Ag Day is this Saturday. Parking is free, but check the email sent by Karri about where you can park. We will be on the grass by Worrilow by the South College entrance (we are next to equine). Our exhibit is an educational exhibit, showing the public about different types of production animals. We are mainly there to answer the children’s questions, face painting, and watching the kids to make sure they are not disruptive to the animals. There will also be activity sheets for swine, which includes coloring. If you ordered the Ag Day shirts, please wear them. If you don’t have a current one, but have one from the last several years, please wear that. If you don’t have any, wear Delaware attire. If you are setting up on Friday, meet at 2:30.

Here are the minutes from our meeting held on 4/18 at California Tortilla

Ag Day
By request of the Ag Day committee, we are adding some animals (cow, calf, piglets, in addition to our sheep). We are still focusing on our sheep, and should be a larger area for our animals. Also, we still need people to sign up for Ag Day, especially our last shift (3-5). Remember, you won’t be considered an active member unless you volunteer for at least one shift. Attached is the current shift schedule.

Advisor Appreciation Luncheon
AgCC sponsors an advisor appreciation luncheon each year. This year it is on May 17th (reading day) in the TNS commons. Please nominate either your academic or club advisors. Nominations are available in the Talk of Townsend or in the AgCC mailbox in 104 TNS. They are due May 2nd.

AgCC Officer Nominations
AgCC needs a new board of officers for next year. There are 7 positions open (Pres, VP, Treasurer, Secretary, and 3 members at large). Treasurer’s Report

Speaker
Today we had Dr. Tanya Gressley, the newest faculty member in the Department of Animal and Food Science as our speaker. She spoke about her research as a masters, doctoral, and post-doctoral student at University of Maryland and University of Wisconsin. Here at Delaware, she hopes to do research on cow clock genes. She will start teaching Dairy Production in spring 2008, and will either teach lactational physiology or a sophomore level physiology class in 2009.

Ag Day T-Shirts
So here’s the deal with the t-shirts, they are done, however, through a case of untraceable miscommunication, they were printed backwards. I will attach a copy of what the shirt looks like. The sheep will be on the front, and the words across the back. Email me tonight with your opinion. If the majority of people want a reprinting of the shirt correctly, I have to call Taylor’s Ink tomorrow morning. There will be an additional $3 charge/shirt so that he can recup his costs. Think about this. If the shirts will be distributed as is, the cost will be $11.50 (since there are two large designs). Payment would preferably be by check, made out to Animal Science Club.

Banquet
Due to time constraints, we have made an executive decision to have our banquet at Kate’s. If everything goes as planned, the banquet will be on Wednesday, May 16th (the last day of classes), starting at 5:30. More details will come.

Ag Day
Ag Day sign up was today. In accordance with our constitution, to be considered an active member, you must work at least one shift at Ag Day. We are trying to have 6 people per shift. The first shift will be responsible for set up, and the last shift will be responsible for clean up. Here’s what we have so far, if you want to sign up, please request an unfilled position first, and if you can’t work at any other time, a second choice.

UPenn Vet School Panel recap
Four students from UPenn vet school came and talked about their experiences. They were all Delaware alumni, and ranged from first year to fourth year, and there was also someone with the combined VMD/PhD program.

Banquet
We will be voting on a location for our banquet next week, so everyone bring your ideas.

Ag Day
T-Shirt- Our top two finishers were Robert’s Sheep-tree design, and Chelsea and Matt’s “A breed of their Own.” Each of them will get a $20 gift certificate for Dunkin’ Donuts. Our final design will be “A Breed of their Own.”
We need three members to help with set up on Friday from 2:30 to finish. You will be setting up chairs, tables and trash cans. Sign up for Ag Day shifts will be next week. If you would like to be part of the clean up, you can sign up for the last shift.
Just a reminder, in order to be considered an active member of the club, you must do at least one shift at Ag Day.
We will be finishing our posters next week after our speaker.

We met in the commons of Townsend for about an hour and started our posters for Ag Day.
After, we had students from UPenn Vet School talk to us about their experiences. We had very good turnout, and the panel was very informative.

AgrAbility
Today, Sally from AgrAbility came and talked to us about the AgrAbility organization. She thanked us for donating money every year, and told us that our donations from this year and last year are being used to provide automated blinds for a poultry producer who has had multiple surgeries.
AgrAbility is also starting a program known as AgrAbility ambassadors. If you are interested in educating the public on what AgrAbility does, contact one of the officers for a brochure (if you didn’t get one during the meeting.) Also, internships at AgrAbility are available. If you are interested, please email Sally at svanschaik@esdel.org.

Ag Day
After Sally spoke to us, we briefly broke into committees and discussed what would be needed for posters. Next week we will make our posters, so bring craft supplies or laptop as needed by your committees.
Also, if you are interested in getting an animal science club ag day t-shirt, please email me (jenp@udel.edu) with you name and size. I will be collecting names and sizes until April 4th (the day we decided on the t-shirt design). If you do not tell me by then, you will not get a shirt, we are not ordering extras this year.

Service
The AgrAbility speaker will be coming on March 14th. We’re going to try to meet in 132 TNS.
Steve Cook is having his sale on March 31st. We feel that helping him out before that would be too much in this month, so we’re going to try to email him to see if there’s a time after the March 31st that we could help out.
Pre-vet
The UPenn Vet panel is going to meet either on 3/19 or 3/21 (a M or W) in 132 TNS at around 6:30. Right now we’re trying to figure out what the best day for the vet students is. We’ll probably start at 6:30 with a short period to mingle with the students, and then we’ll have about an hour (7-8) for the panel. Right now it’s looking like there will be mostly 1st and 2nd year students, including a VMD/PhD student. We’re also looking at opening the panel to the entire college.
Fundraising
Our carwash is on Saturday, March 10th, from 8am -3pm. There will be 4 shifts with 6 people each. The car wash is at Newark carwash on Elkton Rd. We will be selling some snacks and soda while there. Next week we will be making signs to advertise stuff. We have a facebook group (http://delaware.facebook.com/event.php?eid=2246343834&ref=nf), so invite your friends!
Livestock
We are working on getting the newest professor coming to speak to the club.

Other Stuff
Ag Ambassadors
Ag Ambassadors are currently taking applications. They are available online or in 104 TNS. They must be returned to 104 TNS by March 9th.

Alpha Zeta Kickball Tourney
AZ has tentatively scheduled a charity kickball tournament for April 15th. More information to follow.

Sweatshirts
We are thinking about getting animal science sweatshirts. They should cost about $20. So think of ideas!

5K Run
There is a 5K run this Sunday that benefits the Women Moving Forward, which provides exercise equipment and nutritional education for lower income women in Wilmington. The run starts at the towers. Email Kaitlyn form more information (kaitlyn@udel.edu).

Regionals
Regionals was last weekend at Penn State. The secret category was bison, and we had a lot of fun. Next years regionals will be close by at Del Val.

Hey everyone, here are the minutes from our meeting on Weds. February 21:

Treasurer’s Report

The club voted to pay for the hotel used by those who traveled to Nationals in January. The price was approximately $300.

AgrAbility Speaker
The speaker has changed the date of her talk, so we will be speaking with her and presenting her with the check from Ag Carnival on Weds, March 14 during our usually meeting time and place.

UPenn Vet Panel
We are currently making final preparations with the students and getting a room. This panel will be open to all students in the University, and will most likely be held in Townsend during a time that is separate from our usual meeting.

Carwash
The car wash has been changed to Saturday, March 10th. This will be on a Saturday. We are in the final preparations, and just need to meet with the owner.

Ag Day
We are currently holding a T-shirt design contest for our Ag Day shirts. The theme of Ag Day is “Rooted in the past, branching into the future.” Shirts can stay within this theme, or go in a totally different direction. The T-shirt deadline is April 4th, at which time, the entries will be voted upon, and the top two finishers will get a prize. Please email your entries to jenp@udel.edu.

Banquet
The social committee has picked up some menus and information from some restaurants around Main Street. If any one can find any other places to hold banquet within a 15 mile radius, that would be great. Please bring your information to the next meeting.

Regionals
Regionals is this weekend. For all people who are going, here is some information.
What is going to happen:
We will be meeting on Friday at 3:30 in the Russell lot, and taking university vans to Penn State. We will check into the hotel, and we have the rest of the evening to ourselves. We will probably do some quiz bowl practice, and let the presenters practice as well.
On Saturday, we will be getting up early, bundling up, and heading to judging. Some of the species we will be evaluating are Percheron horses, Shorthorn beef cattle, and Hampshire sheep. Then, we will go to some building for quiz bowl/presentations. Lunch will be served during this time. Once this is done, we go back to the hotel and get ready for the dinner banquet and dance. On Sunday, the hotel will have a continental breakfast from 6:30 to 8, and we can leave at any time. The vans will most likely be leaving at staggered times.
What to bring:
Warm cloths – jeans, sweatshirt, boots, long sleeve for judging
Bring your blue Ag Day shirt from last year, if you don’t have one, we have extras. This will be for quiz bowl
Presenters dress business casual (you can change from your judging cloths to your nice ones) – slacks/khakis with nice shirts
Banquet – dressy
Dance – comfortable “party” cloths.

Here are the minutes for the meeting held on Weds, February 14, 2007.

Treasurer’s Report
Account - $1172.53

AgrAbility Speaker
We are planning on having a speaker from AgrAbility come speak to the club on the 28th. During her talk, we will present the check from the auction held during Ag Carnival.

Vet Student Panel
We are currently contacting several Delaware alum who are students at UPenn vet school. We are hoping to open up the panel to all students in the college. The panel will probably be held in addition to our usual weekly meeting, and we are hoping to book 132 Townsend. The panel has been tentatively scheduled for the middle of March, but more information will be forthcoming.

Carwash
Our carwash is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, March 4th (with raindate being Sunday, March 11). It is an automated carwash, and we get $4 for every car that goes through. We can ask for donations or sell things (like baked goods or hot chocolate, etc). We will also likely have signs advertising the car wash. Our hope is that people will want to get the salt off their cars, so we’ll get a good amount of people going through. Think about if you would like to sell something.

Ag Day
Ag Day is the college and state wide gathering that happens on the last Saturday of April every year. This years theme is something along the lines of “Rooted in the past, branching into the future.” Since we always seem to be scrambling for shirt ideas, this year we will be holding a contest for shirt ideas. Usually, we have a simple logo on the front (no need to design that), but a larger design on the back with some sort of witty or funny comment. Email any designs you come up with to me at jenp@udel.edu. Keep in mind a color scheme for shirt and lettering while you make it, but be aware that it may change. Also, due to price, only one color ink can be used. Ideas are due at the meeting on April 4th, where we will also be voting on the winner. The top two finishers will receive an as of yet undecided prize.
Also, we are going to concentrate on one species of animal this year, and that animal is sheep. Each committee will be given a topic to make a poster about, such as sheep fun facts. More about this will be explained at the next meeting.

Banquet
Banquet is held at the end of the year. This year, we are going to try to go back to the more traditional banquet format, but first, we need a place to hold banquet. It may seem like a long time from now, but we need to book a place now. If any one knows of a nice restaurant with a private room, they are encouraged to get price estimates and possible menu options. Either bring you ideas to the meeting or email them to me at jenp@udel.edu.

Hey everyone, here are the minutes for the Animal Science club held on February 7, 2007.

Treasurer’s Report

National’s Recap
A group of our members went to Florida over winter break for the National Block and Bridle convention. They listened to guest speakers and toured local agriculture establishments, including a horse farm.

AgrAbility Speaker
We are hoping to get a speaker from AgrAbility for Weds, Feb 28. This would be the meeting after Regionals, so there would not be a lot to discuss. We will present the check from our auction at Ag Carnival to her.

Other Speaker Ideas
There is a new dairy professor at the ag school, so maybe we can ask her to come and speak about her previous research and what she plans to do here.
There is also the possibility to get a wildlife rehabilitator as a speaker, as well as some UPenn vet students who are alumni of UD.

Carwash
We are hoping to have a car wash on a Saturday in Mid-March. We can either sell something while we wash cars, or just have a donation jar. We would like some ideas of what we can sell, so please send any ideas that you have to Kaitlyn at kaitlyn@udel.edu.

Ag Day Prep
Ag Day is our big activity in the spring. It is held every year on the last Saturday of April. While that may seem like a long time from now, it comes up a lot quicker then you would think. One thing that always bogs us down is t-shirt ideas, so your job is to start thinking of t-shirt ideas for the club. They usually consist of a little drawing on the back with a witty saying. Also, we always do a little bit of an education portion, and this year we were thinking of keeping it to one species, probably sheep. So if people could think of what posters we could make about sheep, that would be great.

Hey Club!

I just received the information for the NESA Regional competition that is being held at Penn State from February 23-25, 2007. The registration fee is $65 per student, and the hotel rooms will be $62 plus tax per night. The registration fee includes a t-shirt, snack on Friday night, Saturday morning breakfast, Saturday lunch, Saturday evening banquet and dance, and a continental breakfast on Sunday.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with what goes on at Regionals, I’d first like to stress that it is a TON of fun (seriously!). On Saturday morning, we will be doing livestock judging in an arena. We will rotate in stations of beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, and a "mystery category", and for each category we will be ranking the animals in order of best to worst. Don’t worry if you have never judged livestock before, most of us haven’t! We’ll have some practice sessions beforehand so everyone has a basic idea of what to look for. Then in the afternoon, we will be doing the quiz bowl and paper presentations. Quiz bowl teams will consist of 4 quiz-bowlers plus one presenter (or it can be a 4 person team and one person will have to do both quiz bowl and a presentation). The quiz bowl is basically like jeopardy where each person holds a buzzer and whoever buzzes in first gets to answer the question. Most of the questions are of topics we have covered in our animal science classes…many are from ANSC101!! It follows tournament-style elimination, and the final two teams face off in front of everyone. The paper presentations are a review of peer-reviewed research articles, where we present the topic in front of judges using a power point presentation. They are limited to 8 minutes long. It really isn’t as scary as it sounds, I’ve presented the past 2 years and it’s really quick and painless. The banquet and dance on Saturday night is beyond amazing, enough said.

So far the plan is to rent university vans to drive up there Friday mid-morning, and we will return on Sunday afternoon.

I highly encourage you all to attend Regionals, it is a great way learn more about livestock, as well as a time to bond with fellow Animal Science Club members. If you are interested, take a moment to ponder it and please reply to me at jscib@udel.edu by WEDNESDAY December 6th at midnight. You will need to make a check out to Animal Science Club for the $65 registration fee. You can give the checks to us on Wednesday evening at Longwood Gardens, or you can put them in the Animal Science Club mailbox in 104 Townsend Hall by FRIDAY afternoon.
Also, if you have written any paper reviews of any topic involving animal science, even if you are not planning on attending the competition, please email me (jscib@udel.edu) the word document of the paper, as well as the power point if you have one. If we cannot come up with enough pre-made presentations, we will have to write them up ourselves, and I’m pretty sure no one would really want to do that.

Remember, if you plan on going to NESA in February, email me (again, jscib@udel.edu) by this Wednesday to let me know you’re in, and include your t-shirt size (S-XL). If you have any questions regarding the competition, or anything really, don’t hesitate to ask!!

Longwood Gardens

Our meeting next week will be our annual Christmas trip to Longwood Gardens. Two graduate students from the Longwood Gardens Graduate program will be giving us a tour. We will also be getting 20 free tickets. If you are still interested in going, please email me (jenp@udel.edu). We will be meeting at 5 in the Russell Lot next Weds. We will be leaving at 5:15 at the latest, so please be there at time.

Regionals

Regionals will be held from Feb 23-25 at Penn State. Registration is approximately $55. Hotels are usually about $70/night, plus a little pocket money for food during travel days (all food on Saturday is provided). If you are interested in going to regionals, email Jenna (jscib@udel.edu).

Holiday Dinner

Zoo Trip Recap

The trip to the Baltimore Zoo was a huge success. We had a backstage tour to the Africa area (including zebras, African birds like an ostrich, and two rhinos). We even got to pet a rhino. We also got a tour of the vet clinic and saw the surgery rooms and saw some of their experiments.

Longwood Gardens

We are going to Longwood Gardens on December 6th (the last day of class). If you want to go, please email me in the next week. I will no longer be adding people to the list at 9pm on Weds the 15 (next week).

Steve Cook

We will be going to Steve Cook’s farm on Saturday the 18th. We will be leaving at 7:30am from the Russell Lot. We will be building stuff and working with pigs. Steve will be providing a bbq lunch. We will also have some regionals practice. If you would like to come, please email me.

Fundraising

Working at the Cattle Industry Convention and Trade Show is a great opportunity for students to network with beef industry leaders, state affiliate and beef council staff and allied industry representatives as well as NCBA staff. NCBA will select between 10-15 students to help us with various activities through out the week in Nashville. We will pick up the student’s registration fee, lodging and most meals. The students are only responsible for their transportation to Nashville and their spending money during the week. Again this year, there is a student rate available to attend the convention if you would like to bring a student group to the meeting. But, this year, we are pleased to offer a FREE day in the Trade Show on Saturday, Feb. 3 from 9:00am – 2:00 pm. Amazon Gift Wrapping

Amazon.com is having a gift wrapping event through December. We go to a location in New Castle for a 4 hour shift and are paid per package. We were planning on going on December 3rd, where we would be paid $.75/package. We can go with a maximum of 20 people. The shifts are either 9 to 2 or from 2 to 6, and were are probably going to the morning shift. If you are interested in attending, email Danielle at dsmarsh@udel.edu.

Guest Speaker Updates

We have had two people volunteer to be guest speakers at some point. The equine vet at New Bolton Center would love to talk with us as would Marci Trover, a club alumni who teaches the animal health 111 lab. Amanda Kilby also has several connections for people to come speak with us about working in the production part of the industry. Jenna is also going to try to get some current students at UPenn and maybe an admissions officer to come and speak with us next semester.

Longwood Gardens

We are in the process of putting together our annual Longwood Gardens trip. It will be held on December 6th, the last day of classes. Our tour guides (Longwood Grad Students) would like us to be there at 6pm.

Steve Cook

We will be volunteering at Steve Cooks farm on Saturday Nov, 18th. More details are forthcoming, but we are going to ask him to help us with judging in preparation for Regionals.

Dues! Next week is the final week for dues. $15 for new members and $10 for former members.
Newark Car Wash said we would get $4 for every car that goes through the was, and we could even set up a stand to sell stuff. Since it is a tunnel car wash, we could theoretically do it now, but most likely we will do this in the spring (March?).

HOLA will be sponsoring HOLAween on Friday, November 3rd in the Trabant multipurpose room starting at 7pm. It is free, and there are prizes for costumes.

On Saturday, Nov 4th at 6pm, the Indian Student Association will be having a fashion show and fundraiser.

Ag Carnival

Ag Carnival went spectacularly. Out combined team AB came in third place! Good job guys. Our second team stayed with tradition and finished last, but with a valiant effort. If you have any pictures from Ag Carnival please email either Stacy Green (sgreen@udel.edu) or Michelle Lapara (mlapara@udel.edu) with them as soon as possible so they can be in the scrapbook.
AgrAbiligy Auction
We raised a total of $1018 at the auction. Excellent job to everyone! The money was gained from the auction and also via donations from alumni, including Dr. Gaines, a former president of Animal Science Club. Thank you to everyone who helped getting donations and who helped out at the auction in any capacity~

Kilby Cream Fundraising Event

The fundraising event will take place this Sunday at Kilby Cream from 2-5 pm. We will most likely be helping only in a volunteer capacity. However, if you have any cloths you want to donate, please be sure that you deliver it to Jenna before 2pm this Friday (the 13). Cloths should be long sleeve shirts and long pants. If you need to location of Jenna’s house please email her at jscib@udel.edu. If you want more information (directions, etc) about the event, please email Amanda at akilby@udel.edu.

Halloween Potluck Dinner

Our next social event is quickly coming up. We are going to have a Halloween potluck dinner (costumes encouraged). We will have it on Sunday, October 29, starting between 6 and 6:30. This is parents weekend, but we still hope you all will be able to stop by. Jen and Danielle have graciously donated their house as the venue. Sign ups for food/supplies will be next week, so think about if you will be able to make or bring anything to the event.

Baltimore Zoo

Kaitlyn has gotten in touch with alumni Linda Pill at the Baltimore Zoo. She is willing to give us a backstage tour on a Saturday on the stipulation that we arrive there at 9 (before the zoo opens). We will be going on Saturday, November 4th, so keep that date open. Here is a list of things we can see at the zoo. Please email Kaitlyn (kaitlyn@udel.edu) your top four choices for exhibits. Also email her if you want to sign up to go.

Ag Carnival
Ag Carnival is this Saturday on Webb Farm. Check in is at 9:30. If you don’t have a ride to Webb Farm, three of our members (Lorna, Kaitlyn, and Erin) have volunteered to take people up. Meet them in the Russell lot (our normal meeting place) at 9:15 and they’ll take you guys up. If you know you’re going to have problems getting up to Webb farm, email me and I’ll set something up for you.
We have several items to auction, including certificates from Freddy’s DP Dough and Shaggy’s. We also have several from salon’s, nail places, and Tan Inn. We are going to make a Food Gift Basket and a Beauty Gift Basket. An alumni also mailed us enough stuff to make 2 Got Milk gift baskets. We also have several shirts and an autographed book. Thank you Tyler, Kaitlyn, and Lisa.
There will be Ag Carnival t-shirts for sale and ag school license plate rims for $10 and $5 respectively.

Social: The zoo trip is in the works. We are also thinking of having a Halloween Potluck. It will probably be sometime during the weekend of the 27th, 28th or 29th. This is parents weekend, and I think a nice potluck dinner on a Sunday night would be nice. This will be discussed more after Ag Carnival.
Fundraising: Amanda Kilby may still need help at her families festivities. Email akilby@udel.edu for more information. It is on Sunday the 15th. We really, really need fundraising ideas. One was working concessions at a Blue Rock game, but the season is rapidly coming to a close, so we’d have to plan that for next spring probably. Email any fundraising ideas to dsmarsh@udel.edu.

Newark Community Day
We made $142.50 in donations. Good job! Again, the most popular attraction was face painting, although the fish did bring a good amount of people as well.
Cowtown Rodeo
We are going to Cowtown Rodeo this Saturday. Cowtown was called, and we can have one person in line with the money to buy tickets. Tickets are $8/person. Please try your best to bring exact change. The rodeo starts at 7:30, and we were advised to be there at 6:30. Please arrive at the Russell Lot at 5:30, we will be leaving at 5:45. The Russell Lot is behind the Russell Complex, right of Lovett and Haines. An attached list will have all the people signed up for Cowtown. Kilby Cream
Next weeks meeting will be a social/educational event at Kilby Cream. Kilby Cream is a creamery owned by the family of club member Amanda Kilby. It is about 20-30 minutes away in Cecil county, Maryland. We will be having ice cream and seeing how it’s made. We will be meeting in the Russell Lot at around 5:15-5:30, and leaving as close to 5:30 as we can. So do not go to Sharp Lab next week! Attached is a list of people who have signed up. No Show, No Call Policy
With so many trips coming up, I thought it would be a good idea to review the no call no, no show policy. If you sign up for an event, and cannot attend, it is your responsibility to let someone know. We do not want to be late for events because someone does not show up. Also, all members get points for attendance. Points can be used at the end of semesters, usually as discounted or free admission to an event. You will lose a point for each no call, no show. Again, please be responsible and let someone know if you are not going to attend an event you signed up for.
Ag Carnival
Ag Carnival is fast approaching. Ag Carnival is on Saturday, October 7th. Animal Science Club is sponsoring the charity auction benefiting AgrAbility. Flyers were passed out this meeting for handing out to the public. Do not put flyers on the walls or bulletin boards on campus, they are not stamped. However, you can put them on your doors in the dorms. Our goal is to get the public out to the auction, which begins at 1. So, if you have family or friends in the area, try to get them to come out! Also, we are still trying to come up with a list of things to auction, so everybody that has ideas or definite things to auction, email Jenna at jscib@udel.edu.
Stacy made letters to mail to our alumni asking them to either come and bid, or for help donating objects or services. Thank you, Stacy.

Cowtown Rodeo
Our trip to cowtown rodeo is on Saturday, September 23. The price is $8/person for the group rate or $12/person individual. The rodeo starts at 7:30, we need to be in line at 7 at the latest, and it takes about a half hour to get there. If you are interested in going and have not signed up, or have signed up and have since realized you can not go, please email me at jenp@udel.edu.

Ag Carnival
Ag Carnival is on Saturday, October 7. We have decided not to sponsor a physical event, but instead to concentrate on our AgrAbility auction. Please bring ideas of what we can get to auction off. Some ideas from today are tickets to a sporting event/zoo/aquarium, we can contact a beef farmer for some cuts of meat, gym membership, or peddle tractors. If you have more ideas please email Jenna at (jschib@udel.edu). In addition to thinking of things to get donated, we also have to start publicizing the event to bring in people from the community who have money. If you are interested in being on a team and have not already signed up, please email me at jenp@udel.edu.

Steve Cook
Every year we try to go to Steve Cooks farm. So far there are several possible dates at the end of the fall where we can help Steve prepare beef cows for show or vaccinate sows before farrowing. There is no sign up yet, but be prepared for future information.

Block & Bridle National Convention
The national block and bridle convention is being held January 25-27 2007 in Kissimmee Florida. If we register before October 16 the registration is $185/person and there is a special rate of $89/room at a local hotel. This event is a leadership event with one day of tours of local agriculture facilities and one day of speakers. The tours this year range from meat processing plants, fruit, ranches, horses, and wildlife. The tours are on a first come first serve basis, so registering early is key. In order to cover some of the costs, we are going to try to get supplemental money from the school. One of the organizers of the convention this year is Kathleen, a former Animal Science Club president now at the University of Florida.

We are also looking to change banks from WSFS to either Citizens Bank or Delaware National, both of which have no maintenance fees for checking account, something we had trouble with in the past.

Dues
Club dues are due to the treasurer on Sept. 27. New members pay $15 and old members pay $10.

Newark Community Day
Newark Community day is Sunday, September 17. It is a community street fair event. We use this event to raise funds for a charity to be decided on later. Last year we gave to Louisiana Humane Society. We need a table and chairs, so if anyone has a table and some chairs, please email me at jenp@udel.edu.
We are planning on having a fishbowl toss. Winners would get a coupon redeemable for a goldfish at a local pet store. Price has yet to be decided, but some possible numbers would be $.50 for a toss and $1.50 for five tosses. We signed up for shifts during the meeting. They are as follows:

Cowtown Rodeo
Cowtown is a rodeo held in south Jersey. It was decided we would be going on September 23. There is a fee to get in, but if there are more than 20 people going, we can get a group discount. If you are interested, please email me with you name and if you can drive a car, and if so, how many people. Also email me if you signed up, but have since decided you can’t come.

Baltimore Zoo
We are trying to get a trip to the Baltimore Zoo organized. We are trying to in touch with Linda Pill, a former student. They no longer do behind the scenes tours, but there are besides the scene tours done by docents. If we decide to go by ourselves, the fee would be $11.50 if we have a group of 20 or more, or $15 if there are less than 20 people. The trip has been tentatively scheduled for mid October.

Ag Carnival
Ag Carnival is a competition sponsored by AgCC where all ag organizations compete against each other in competitions such as tug-of-war, pie eating, and pumpkin chucking. It is being held on Saturday, October 7 this year. Each group participating is in charge of sponsoring an event. Animal Science Club traditionally sponsors both a physical event, and a charity auction to help AgrAbility. AgrAbility is an organization that helps disabled farmers in the Delmarva area. Since the auction is our event, we need to publicize well in the community, and decide what we want to auction. Last year, our auction item also was part of our event, peddle tractors. Please bring ideas for an event or auction item to our next meeting.

Committees
At the end of the meeting we voted on committee chairs and then broke into committee meetings. All active members must be on a committee.

Fundraising Committee
The fundraising committee is chaired by our treasurer, Danielle Smarsh. There most important thing right now is deciding on who to donate to from our Community Day donations. They are also thinking about getting local farmers to bring/donate pumpkins at our Halloween event for children to paint. They were also thinking about doing clean up at places like Dovar Downs and after football games to get paid for our time.

Pre-Vet Committee
The pre-vet committee is being co-chaired by Vincent Baldanza and Tom Hart. Right now, they are thinking of possible speakers, such as a bird/wildlife vet, and equine vet, or a possible trip to Camden Aquarium.

Social Committee
The social committee is being co-chaired by Chelsea Berdolt and Matt Mullin. Right now, the social chairs are helping to organize the trip to Cowtown, and a possible social event at Kilby Cream ice cream parlor with a tour around the dairy farm. They are also thinking of ice breakers to do at the beginning of meetings so everyone gets to know the new members.

Livestock Committee
The livestock committee is being chaired by Lisa Brody. They are thinking about a possible speaker from Hatfield.

Service Committee
The service committee is being chaired by Erin Stough. The service committee is planning service activities at Delaware Humane and possibly having a blanket and food drive for dogs and cats. They are also thinking about going to schools to talk about the animal science major to those who may not know too much about it.

Other News
Animal Science club is looking for two volunteers to be our representatives at AgCC. Meetings are every other Weds (or Weds as needed) at 4:45. A ride will be provided to Animal Science Club after. If you are interested, please email me back. The position will be given out on a first come basis.

Australia Study Abroad this winter. Dr. Saylor and Dr. Barber will be taking a group to Australia this winter and are still looking for those interested. If you are interested, please contact Dr. Saylor at bsaylor@udel.edu. Freshman are welcome. The deadline is Sept. 25, so please hurry so your spot is not taken. Check out the UD study abroad page. Hello ANSC club members old and new! Here are the minutes for our first meeting on Weds, 8/30/06.
Introductions
President- Jenna Scibilia is a Junior Animal Science major with a minor in Spanish. Her other activities include AgCC, Ag Ambassadors, Sigma Alpha, and gymnastics club. Last year she was club treasurer.
VP- Kaitlyn Lutz is a Senior Animal Science major with a minor in biology. Kaitlyn is also an Ag Ambassador. Last year she was the livestock committee chair.
Treasurer- Danielle Smarsh is a Junior Animal Science major. She also is an Ag Ambassador, in AgCC, and HTAC, an on campus theatre group. Last year she was the service committee chair.
Secretary- Jen Puttress is a Junior Animal Science major with a minor in biology. She also participates in Ag Ambassdors, AgCC, and Alpha Zeta. Last year she was one of the club historians.
Historian- Stacy Green is a Junior Animal Science major. She is also in Ag Ambassadors, ALD, AgCC, and Alpha Zeta. This is her second year as club historian.
Historian-Michelle Lapera is a Sophomore Animal Science major. Her activities include Ag Ambassadors and Sigma Alpha. Last year she was the pre-vet committee chair.
Advisors- Our advisors are Dr. Griffith and Dan Severson.
Upcoming events in September:
Trip to Cowtown Rodeo on a Saturday.
Newark Community Day is on Sunday, September 17. We use this event to raise donations for an animal related charity. Last year we raised money for the Louisiana SPCA. This year we will be giving out coupons for free goldfish and have our usual face painting.
We are planning a trip to the Baltimore Zoo at the end of the month. More information will be forthcoming.
Meeting Agenda:
For the first meeting we had a social event to introduce our new members to each other and to our old members. We made, and ate delightfully sweet ice cream.
Information for interested students who could not attend this meeting:
I apologize for the late email with the information, but there was some miscommunication with Event Services. For those of you who could not attend, do not worry. In fact, we really hope that you attend our next meeting. For those that can not attend due to class/lab conflict do not worry either. We hold many weekend events that you are encouraged to participate in, and you can always start attending business meetings in future semesters. Don’t let your class conflicts discourage you from being a part of the club.
Next meeting:
For now, the meeting next week will be in the same place at the same time. However, there will be another email next week confirming the location, as the room we were in was less than optimal, we’re going to try to fix that. For now, we will be meeting in 103 Sharp Lab at 5:30. For those who don’t know where Sharp Lab is, it is the building next to Gore Hall on E. Delaware.
Next meeting we will be deciding on committee chairs. Please consider being a chairperson.
Social Committee: Committee duties include planning social events which promote fellowship among members.
Fundraising Committee: Committee duties are to design and run fundraising activities for the club. The Treasurer shall serve as Chair of this committee.
Livestock Committee: This committee is responsible for organizing and planning all livestock activities. The livestock committee should arrange for at least one guest speaker per semester.
Pre-vet Committee: this committee is responsible for organizing and planning all pre-vet, companion animal, and exotic animal activities. The pre-vet committee should arrange for at least one guest speaker and/or event per semester.
Community Service Committee: this committee is responsible for planning all community service events.
Please keep in mind that all active members must serve on a committee, so if you don’t want to be a chair, please think about which one you would like to help out with.

We had our last business meeting of the semester on 5/3. Here are the minutes from the meeting:

Treasurer's Report

*We made $170 from donations and $119 from the Plant Sale on Ag Day!!*

Ag Day Report
Although Ag Day was a success overall, and we hope everyone had a great time.. there's always room for improvement. One of the problems we had was with kids feeding the animals with the rations they had mixed. Also, some of us felt that we might have stretched ourselves a bit thin and had too many things going on (facepainting, plant sale, mixing feed, the animals, etc.). Ideas for next Ag day include: have one cohesive theme, condense our activities, do demonstrations throughout the day (the sheep shearing was a hit!), less animal pens?, educate club members about the animals before Ag Day, and have a better layout under the tent.
Also.. don't forget to give Jenna your late t-shirt payments of $5!

Banquet
The Banquet is this coming Wednesday, 5/11 at 5:30pm at Timothy's. We will be meeting in the Russell lot at 5pm to carpool over. If you haven't already paid Jenna, remember to give her your money for Banquet! ($10 for active club members and $19 for non-active/non members.)

Advisor Appreciation nominations
AgCC is collecting nominations for the best advisor of the year. This can be an advisor from a club, academic advisor, lab, etc. A 1-page typed nomination is due by May 9th to the AgCC mailbox in 104 TNS, or you can email it to Stacy at sgreen@udel.edu. There will be a free luncheon on Reading Day (May 18th) from 12-2 in the Commons to recognize the winner. Even if your advisor doesn't win.. he/she will still get a note in recognition for being nominated.. so send in those nominations!

First of all, thank you to everyone who helped with the Animal Science Club on Ag Day... you guys rock! Now here are the minutes from last week's meeting:

Treasurer's Report

Service: We had AgrAbility posters to put up on Ag Day.

Pre-Vet: We have a potential speaker for the Fall.. more details at a later date.

Livestock: No report at this moment.

Fundraising: You can print out extra Plant Sale forms from our website at http://copland.udel.edu/stu-org/ansci/. We really need to get on the Plant Sale at full force, so put them in faculty's mailboxes, talk to your professors, ask the teacher's aides, bug your friends and family, etc. The Plant Sale forms will be due on Wed. 5/10 morning (you can put them in the ANSC Club mailbox in 104 TNS). However, if you already have them, please bring them in at next week's meeting. Although people can pay for the plants when they hand in the forms, money is due at pick-up on Thurs 5/11.

Social: If you have not signed up already, please email Robert at rcgood@udel.edu if you want to go to the Banquet. Also, include in your email whether you want Chicken Marsala or Asian Stir Fry Veggies for your meal. The cost of Banquet is $10 for active members or $19 for non-active members. All guests invited by the Club (i.e., alumni, our advisors, Richard, Larry, Dr. Emara, Dr. Kung, Scott, etc.) will be covered by the Club. The Banquet starts at 5:30pm, but we will be meeting at 5pm in the Russell parking lot to drive over. As a reminder, the Banquet is on May 10th at Timothy's. And please, if you have not already done so, email one of the officers with awards that you would like to give your fellow members at Banquet.

Ag Day
Ag Day was yesterday from 10-4. Thanks to everyone who came out and made it a wonderful event! As a reminder, you must have helped out with Animal Science Club at Ag Day to be an active member of the club.

Officer Nominations for Next Year
At this week's meeting (5/3), all members who are nominated for an officer position will give a short speech, which should include their history of involvement with the club and one creative fundraising idea for the club. If you would still like to be nominated for a position, please email me at jesshall@udel.edu before Wednesday's meeting. Here's a brief overview of the different positions:
Historians (2): Responsible for annual scrapbook, taking pictures at all club events, maintaining alumni mailing lists, compiling annual alumni newsletter, and maintaining the club's website.
Treasurer: Collects all dues and receipts and keeps an accurate inventory and slaes record. Also, needs to submit a yearly treasurer's report and annual budget. He/she is chair of the fundraising committee.
Secretary: Keeps accurate records of all club meetings, sends out minutes, conducts club correspondence, submits new member list to National Block and Bridle, and keeps track of active member status.
Vice President: Presides in absence of the president and is responsible for organizing Ag Day. Also, is responsible for room reservations, membership recruitment events, and organizes activities night.
President: Presides over all regular meetings, prepares meeting agendas, and serves at representative to AgCC. Also, enforces constitution and bylaws.

Hello Animal Science Club!

Wednesday's meeting started off with a guest speaker, Dr. Culp, who is a UD ANSC Club Alumnus and Veterinarian in the Army Corps. Hopefully everyone enjoyed his presentation and found it informative! For those of you pursuing veterinary school, keep in mind the scholarship and funding opportunities provided by the Veterinary Army Corps! We also had two representatives from Huntingdon Life Sciences tell us about position and internship availabilities (www.huntingdon.com). Following our guest speakers, there was a short business meeting.

Plant Sale
Plant Sale Forms were handed out at the meeting. Pick-up for the plants will be on May 11th.

Ag Day
Ag Day is next Saturday!! A sign-up sheet for shifts (set-up, general Ag Day, and clean-up) was sent around. Please email Carolyn at cschnek@udel.edu to sign-up for a shift if you weren't at the meeting. Also, because the Ag Day t-shirts were a little more expensive than we had planned, we're asking that members pay $5 for a shirt to help cover costs. You can pay for your shirt either at next meeting or at Ag Day.

Tour of Dairy
A few of our members helped give a tour of our dairy to two disabled women before the meeting. Despite a rocky start (flat tire), all went well, and the women were very appreciative. Nice job, guys!

Officer Elections
We will have nominations for next year's officers at the next meeting. So start thinking about positions that you would be interested in!

Banquet
Our Banquet will be on May 10th at Timothy's. We will send around a sign-up sheet at the next meeting. Dress for the Banquet is "nice"--aka, no jeans or sneakers. You don't have to get super fancy, but this is our chance to get dressed up a bit.. so have fun with it. Also, please send in your award nominations to one of the officers (not to someone you're nominating, though)!!!

Miscellaneous
Concerning the zoo trip for next semester, it looks like it's going to be too expensive to have a behind-the-scenes tour at the Philadelphia Zoo, so we're going to look into perhaps having Linda Pill show us around the Baltimore Zoo again. Also, we got a thank-you card from the AgrAbility speaker. She was very appreciative of all the money we raised for AgrAbility, and she will keep us posted on how our donation will be spent.

Next Week
Before next week's meeting on 4/19, a few of our members will be giving a tour of the dairy to a disabled woman. If you are part of this group, please meet at 4pm at the dairy. Danielle will send out a reminder email next week.
Also, we will be having a guest speaker at next week's meeting: Dr. Culp from the Army Corps. We hope that you will come out and listen to what's sure to be an interesting presentation from Dr. Culp!

Ag Day
This year at Ag Day we're not going to have any of our conventional crafts. Instead, we will let the kids mix feed to form rations for typical ruminants or nonruminants. There will be posters explaining the nutritional requirements for ruminants (sheep) and nonruminants (chickens), and the kids will be able to bring home their mixed feed samples. In addition, we will have animals, plant sale forms, and AgrAbility posters.
We discussed what we should do about Ag Day shirts--if we should buy extras and sell them. As per vote of the club, we decided that the club will pay for the Tshirts and that we will buy about 15 extra shirts (5 small, 5 medium, and 5 large).

Plant Sale Forms
We are still waiting to hear back from Dr. Emara concerning the varieties of plants we will be selling.

High School Quiz Bowl Competition
There was a committee meeting about the High School Quiz Bowl, and Jenna reported on the committee's decisions. The committee had decided to appease the department by limiting the Quiz Bowl Competition to 4H high school kids, who may be interested in coming to UD, so that we could double our competition as a recruitment tool. However, Dan Severson brought up some concerns about our target audience and proposed "recruitment tool" plans. So, the committee will discuss this further and report back to us on a later date. They will be meeting with Dr. Gelb soon to discuss this and other issues.

AgCC Officers Needed
AgCC, which is composed of representatives from the different clubs in the Ag College, is looking for new officers for next year. If you are interested in nominating yourself, please contact Amanda at akilby@udel.edu for an application form. Also, mark your calendars for the Advisor Appreciation lunch on May 18th from 12-2 in the Commons.

Dairy Tour

Plant Sale

Plant sale order forms will be distributed as soon as we have all the plant names. This will be our major fund raiser for the spring, so everyone sell. Especially to faculty members! More about this will be discussed next week.Car WashThe car wash fundraiser for the spring has been scrapped in favor of concentrating our efforts on the plant sale to raise money.

**AG DAY

Ag Day is Saturday, April 29. We decided to have a display about feed for our education display. We will also have a "make your own animal feed" activity for kids. The animals we will be concentrating on are sheep (ruminants) and chickens (non-rum). In addition, we will have facepainting. The shirts will most likely cost $7-$9. The exact cost will be known by next meeting.

High School Committee

If you are on the committee for the high school quiz bowl or are interested in helping out, we will be meeting at 5, before the next business meeting in 111 Mem.

Delaware Humane Society

There was not enough info for the tentative service activity at the Delaware Humane Society, so the trip has been put on hold.

License Plate Rims

License plate rims from AgCC that say "UDel College of Ag and Natural Resources" will be on sale at Ag day for $5. If you want one before, contact Amanda at akilby@udel.edu.

AgCC elections

AgCC is holding elections for officers soon. If you live on campus, self-nomination forms will be distributed through mail, if you live off campus, they can be found in 104 TNS. Positions are President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and three Members at Large (Public Relations, Fundraising, Club Coordinator).

Hello Animal Science Club!

I hope everyone is having a great Spring Break! Here are the minutes from last week's meeting:

Guest Speaker from AgrAbility
Sally Van Schaik came to talk to us about AgrAbility and how the organization has helped disabled farmers succeed in agriculture. Sometimes they need groups to help in building stairs, etc., so she will be in contact with us in the event that they could use our assistance with such a project. Also, she asked that if anyone has questions or ideas, or if you'd like to attend their Advisory Committee meeting, then you should contact her at svanschaik@gt.esdel.org or 877-204-FARM (3276). Our club has helped fund some of their projects, and Sally wanted to express her thanks for our generous donations. Before she left, we presented her with a check for AgrAbility in the amount of $595, which we raised during the auction for Ag Carnival.

High School Judging/Quiz Bowl Competition

Service Activity
Steve Cook's didn't happen last Sunday, because the people who went got lost. In order to prevent this confusion for future trips to Steve Cook's farm, we talked about possibly posting directions to Steve's on our website. Unfortunately, the rest of our semester is rather busy, and Steve is busy throughout April, so we will not be able to reschedule Steve Cook's for this semester. Instead, as another service activity, we will look into helping out at the Delaware Humane Association sometime in April.

Animal Technician/Intern Needed
Melissa Goodson, a 2005 Animal Science UD Alumnus, wanted to spread the word that her company, Huntingdon Life Sciences, is expanding their toxicology department and is looking for technicians. This is a great opportunity for graduating Seniors looking for jobs in the field, or for an undergraduate who would like an internship for the Summer. Huntingdon Life Sciences, situated in central New Jersey, is one of the world's largest Contract Research Organizations. Treasurer's Report

Committee Reports
Service: Helping out at Steve Cook's is today, Sunday. A few members from the club will give a dairy tour for the disabled woman at around 4pm on Wednesday, April 19th (email dsmarsh@udel.edu if interested in helping!). Also, we will be having our AgrAbility Speaker, Sally, come talk to the club on Wednesday, March 22nd.
Pre-Vet: Dr. Pope was contacted and is really interested in talking to the club. He will be our Pre-Vet guest speaker on Wednesday, April 19th.
Livestock: We will have a guest speaker form Purdue on Wednesday, April 12th. Also, if you have any ideas concerning future Livestock committee-run activities, please email Kaitlyn at kaitlyn@udel.edu. A few suggestions included a behind-the-scenes tour at the Philadelphia Zoo or a visit to an Amish Farm.
Fundraising: Our Fundraising Committee Chair was not at the meeting, so we will discuss Plant Sale Forms and a date/location for the Car Wash at the next meeting.
Social: Our Banquet will be Timothy's on Wednesday, May 10th. Here are our choices for side dishes, meat and dessert. Please e-mail Robert at rcgood@udel.edu with your votes on the three items before Wednesday's meeting!

Ag Day
We discussed some potential crafts for Ag Day, including picture frames, pig noses, duck or elephant puppets, or general paperbag puppets. We will finalize our Craft options at a future meeting. Also, we brainstormed some ideas for our educational posters, such as posters with farm animal information or interactive posters with velcro animals. We decided that the club will break-up into committees after Spring Break to further discuss/outline poster ideas. Instead of handmaking our posters this year, we thought we'd take it one step further and get them printed out (possibly laminated?). Dr. Griffiths also suggested that we include a "Who are you, and where are you now?" poster with pictures of Alumni and post-it-notes, so that Alumni can fill in their information. Lastly, concerning Ag Day t-shirts, Carolyn will get them printed at Taylor's Inc. If you are interested in getting an Animal Science Club Ag Day T-shirt, please contact Carolyn at cschnek@udel.edu.

High School Judging/Quiz Bowl Competition
Dr. Griffith's reported back on the Department's discussion of our High School Judging/Quiz Bowl Competition idea. The Department had a few primary concerns about our competition. First of all, they feel that we need to redefine our audience. We had originally intended our competition to be open to Delaware FFA and 4H clubs and Delaware High School students, with the hopes that this competition would get these students interested in possibly pursuing our program at UD. However, most Ag High School students aren't college-bound. So, we would need to redefine our population of interest to either Delaware Ag clubs or Delaware High School students, because these two populations are very different, and it would be hard to accommodate them both. Next, there is little to no support among the faculty to hold the livestock judging aspect of our competition. There are many reasons against livestock judging, namely, our farm doesn't have good classes of animals to judge from. Although one of our attempts with this competition is to "get the College of Ag back to 'Ag'," we have to keep in mind what is contemporary in the field. And the fact is, the field is moving away from livestock judging and focusing more on form and function. So we need to rethink a lot of things concerning our goals for this competition. If we leave out judging, should we have more of an academic triathlon? Also, perhaps we should include the Food Science Club? These are just a few of the concerns we need to address before we can move forward.
We would like to establish a committee that will be responsible for organizing this competition. If you are interested in being a member of the committee, please email Jenna at jscib@udel.edu.

Service: Unfortunately, Steve Cook cannot accommodate us for the April 22nd date...however, he really needs help on March 18th or 19th. Fundraising: The club voted on whether or not to hold a Car Wash or a Dog Wash or both. We decided to just concentrate on a Car Wash, and the location/date of the Car Wash will be discussed next meeting.
Social: We voted and decided that the location of our Banquet will be Timothy's, and it will be held on Wednesday, May 10th (clear your calendars!). Robert will look up a tentative menu and the club will be given options to choose from at a future date. Regionals

Ag Day T-shirt Vote
We voted on a club t-shirt design for Ag Day at the meeting. The club decided on Carolyn's idea with the "Duck, Duck, Blue Hen" theme. Please contact Carolyn if you would be interested in a shirt (cschnek@udel.edu).

Ag Day
As in previous years, the club will have a petting zoo, face painting, educational displays, and arts & crafts at Ag Day. Please start thinking of craft ideas, and we will vote on them at this week's meeting. Also, start thinking of ideas for our educational displays. (We will work on our posters/displays at the few meetings right before Ag Day.) Not only will our club need lots of help from members on Ag Day, but the Ag Day Class is also asking for volunteers. Please contact Sarah Moore at smoo@udel.edu if you are interested in volunteering. Also, consider submitting t-shirt ideas to the t-shirt design competition held by the Ag Day Class. Lastly, the club voted to donate money to Ag Day so that we will get our name put on the official Ag Day shirts.

High School Judging/Quiz Bowl Competition
Amanda and Jenna met with Dr. Gelb, the ANSC department chair, to discuss the practicality of our idea to hold an ANSC competition for Delaware High School students. They told him what we plan on doing and how it will benefit the ANSC Club and the Ag College. Dr. Gelb was enthusiastic about the idea, but he will have to discuss it with other faculty members at the next Department meeting. Dr. Gelb recommended that we keep it small-scale (just Delaware FFA clubs and High School students), and that we start looking into budgeting and donations. Also, we will need to set up a committee that will be responsible for planning this event, which we anticipate will be held in the Fall. Please start thinking about if you'd like to be a part/head of this committee.

Howdy ANSC Club!

Here's the minutes from Wednesday's meeting, which was held at the lovely California Tortilla on Main Street. Thank you, Robert, for organizing our meeting's special location!

Committee Reports
Service: We are scheduled to help out on Steve Cook's Farm on April 19th. Danielle will be contacting Barbara Graham at the Mary Campbell center to set up a dairy tour for the disabled woman. Also, we will be having our AgrAbility Speaker come talk to the club on Wednesday, March 22nd. In order to publicize this event so that others interested in AgrAbility may come listen to our speaker, we will put an advertisement in Talk of Townsend and put in a plug at AgCC.
Pre-Vet: More information on Pre-Vet speakers at future meetings.
Livestock: Concerning guest speakers, we are waiting to hear back from the Purdue representative. We will provide further details on Livestock speakers/trips at future meetings.
Fundraising: We will start advertising for our Plant Sale around April 1st. As far as other fundraising ideas, we hope to have another Car Wash when it gets warmer, and we also talked about potentially doing a Dog Wash. The club has had problems with Dog Washes in the past, so we need to discuss this idea further. If you have any other fundraising ideas, please contact Jenna at jscib@udel.edu.
Social: We're still discussing the location for our Banquet. Possible places include The Tracks or Timothy's. The Social committee will look into places/prices and have more information at next meeting.

Regionals Report
Everyone who went to Regionals (NESA) this past weekend at UMass had an excellent time. And not only did we all have lots of fun, but we also did rather well for ourselves. The events started early Saturday morning with livestock judging, where we were all surprised to see that the "special class" was not alpaca (which we had studied how to judge the night before!) but tobacco leaves. (Apparently the Amherst area is big on Tobacco.) Then after judging livestock in the freezing cold, we braved our way through the snow to UMass' campus for the Quiz Bowl competitions and Research presentations. For the Quiz Bowl, one of our teams came in 2nd place, and they actually got to play the final round in front of everyone in a huge auditorium! Some other highlights were Erin McDowell for placing 6th in the Paper Presentations (thank you to Danielle Smarsh for donating your PowerPoint presentation!), Carolyn Schnek for winning 1st place in the Individual Research competition, and congratulations to all of our team members for helping Delaware place 4th for the overall competition!! Everyone did an awesome job! And to thank Dr. Gelb and the ANSC Department for covering our hotel costs at Regionals, a Thank You card was sent around at the meeting, and we plan on leaving a cake in the ANSC department office for the secretaries and faculty. We're all very proud of our club's success, and here's to future wins at NESA!

Ag Day
We're still discussing Ag Day T-shirt ideas. Carolyn came up with an idea of playing on "Duck, duck, goose," but instead of a goose, using a blue hen. Her idea is included at the end of the minutes. Please draw up any other T-shirt ideas you may have, and we'll vote on them at the next meeting.

Other
-The Extension Scholars program applications are due April 7th.
-Amanda received an alumni email from Karen Knutsen, who suggested that we include a column in the next alumni newsletter about what alumni are doing. The club also thought of possibly setting up a Yahoo account for alumni to log in and tell us about where they are now and what they're doing. If you have any suggestions on how we can keep tabs on our alumni, please email Amanda at akilby@udel.edu.
-Those who went to Regionals were so enthusiastic about their experience, that some of the club members have expressed interest in possibly hosting a high school-level judging and quiz bowl competition next year here at UD. This is a big idea that would require lots of help and commitment, but if we'd like to host something like this in the future, then it's important that we start thinking about it now. However, we should also keep in mind that it may be Delaware's turn to host Regionals in 2010! (The last time UD hosted Regionals was in '96.) In any case, if you'd be interested in helping out with something of this nature, please voice your opinions at future meetings, or email Amanda at akilby@udel.edu.
